Massive Microsoft outage reported by thousands of users

Thousands of Microsoft users reported an outage on Thursday afternoon.

Microsoft 365, Exchange, Outlook, Teams and the Microsoft Store were all offline, according to Downdetector, with the reports peaking shortly before 3:30 p.m. ET.

More than 15,000 people had reported issues, with 62% having problems with Microsoft Exchange, the tech giant’s platform that provides business email, scheduling and collaboration programs.

“We’re investigating a potential issue impacting multiple Microsoft 365 services, including Outlook, Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Purview,” a Microsoft customer service account posted on social media.

“We’ve identified a portion of service infrastructure in North America that is not processing traffic as expected,” a follow-up post read.

By around 4:15 p.m., Microsoft said it had “restored the affected infrastructure to a heathy state,” but that “further load balancing is required to mitigate impact.”

“We’re directing traffic to alternate infrastructure to achieve recovery,” the company said.

The outage comes a week after Verizon experienced service disruptions nationwide leading to the company offering customers a $20 credit.
