Meghan Markle, Prince Harry share urgent message about the LA fires

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have spoken out about the destructive LA wildfires.

After the Palisades Fire, Sunset Fire, Eaton Fire and other blazes tore through Los Angeles this week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared a message about the deadly tragedy on their website Thursday.

“In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life,” their statement began, noting that “a state of emergency has been issued.”

“If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas,” they added, providing a long list of organizations that people can donate to, including chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen (which has often partnered with Harry and Meghan’s charity, the Archewell Foundation), plus CAL FIRE and the LA Fire Department Foundation, a nonprofit that supports local firefighters.

Renowned animal lovers, Prince Harry and Meghan also linked to the Animal Wellness Foundation and the Compton Cowboys, citing their work caring for animals affected by the fires.

Airbnb and 211LA — which are offering free housing to those displaced as a result of the wildfires — along with Baby2baby and All Power Books, nonprofits that have stepped up to provide supplies amid the crisis, were mentioned on Meghan and Harry’s list as well.

Meghan, 43, and Harry, 40, continued their statement, telling good Samaritans to “open your home” to those fleeing the fires if able to do so.

“If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do,” the Sussexes wrote. “And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.”

Pointing out other ways that people could “give back,” Meghan and Harry said, “Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials.”

The royals ended their statement by mentioning that the American Red Cross “is on the ground helping those in need.”

Prince Harry and Meghan live approximately 90 miles north of Los Angeles in the Santa Barbara celebrity enclave of Montecito. The pair moved into a multimillion-dollar mansion in the upmarket neighborhood shortly after stepping down as senior working royals in 2020, which could be in jeopardy if the Palisades Fire continues to burn out of control.
