SAN DIEGO — The Mets were vocal about prioritizing the bullpen ahead of the trade deadline, and have made good on the promise to strengthen it by trading for right-hander Tyler Rogers on Wednesday afternoon, according to reports. The return is hefty: right-hander Jose Butto is going back to San Francisco in the deal, in a rare trade that features a big leaguer for a big leaguer, as well as two of the Mets’ top prospects in outfielder Drew Gilbert and right-handed starter Blade Tidwell.
It’s the second trade for a reliever since Friday. Left-hander Gregory Soto was traded to the Mets from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for two minor league pitchers.
A 34-year-old submariner, Rogers is tough to pick up and suppresses hard contact. He throws a sinker and a slider, making his living in getting outs on the ground with a 64.4% ground-ball rate, ranked in the 99th percentile by Statcast. Rogers leads the NL in appearances this season with 53, going 4-3 with a 1.80 ERA over 50 innings. A free agent at the end of the season, Rogers has played the entirety of his seven-year career with San Francisco.
The twin brother of right-handed reliever Taylor Rogers, both brothers were traded Wednesday, with the Cincinnati Reds sending Taylor and a shortstop prospect to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
This is a developing story. Check back for details.
