WASHINGTON — A challenging season for Francisco Alvarez continues with another injury.
The Mets placed the catcher on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb injury Tuesday afternoon, recalling Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse to take his spot on the roster. It’s unrelated to the left thumb injury he suffered early last season, as well as separate from the hamate surgery he underwent on his left hand during spring training in March.
Alvarez suffered the injury during the Mets’ win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday night in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, during MLB’s Little League Classic. The severity of the injury is not yet known, but there is some initial concern Alvarez could be out for the rest of the season.
It’s a less-than-ideal time for the 23-year-old Venezuelan, to say the least. A revamped swing and a hand injury left him trying to find his stride at the plate over the first half of the season. Alvarez hit just .236 in the first half and was even demoted to Triple-A Syracuse for a stretch in June, with the Mets wanting to see him improve his timing on fastballs, as well as clean up some elements of his defensive game. Since returning, he’s hit .323 with a 1.054 OPS and four home runs.
The Mets begin a six-game road trip Tuesday in Washington against the Nationals.
