LOS ANGELES — Mark Vientos suffered a hamstring injury Monday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it sure sounds like he’s heading toward the injured list.
Vientos ran out of the box on a ground ball in the top of the 10th inning in the Mets’ 4-3 extra-inning win, collapsing almost immediately. After a few seconds, he came up clutching his right hamstring, taking a moment before attempting to put weight on it. Eventually, he walked off mostly on his own, with some minimal help by first base coach Antoan Richardson.
It was a hard-hit ball in the hole on the left side, and had he been able to run he might have been able to beat the tag.
“It didn’t look good,” manager Carlos Mendoza said of the play. “He’s going through all of the testing and we’ve got to wait.”
The Mets expect to have test results Tuesday. The PR staff declined to make him available, however, when leaving the ballpark he said he felt “OK.” He walked out with a noticeable limp.
The struggling third baseman hasn’t gotten off to the best start this season. He hit 27 home runs last year, but has struggled to produce consistently so far in 2025. Defensively, the Mets have been using Brett Baty at third more often over the last few weeks, using Vientos to DH, or leaving him on the bench all together.
Vientos went 0-for-2 Monday, coming off the game to pinch-hit for DH Jared Young in the top of the eighth.
The injury prompted questions about Ronny Mauricio. Hours later, the team called up the 24-year-old to the big leagues, per reports.
The infielder has been raking in the minor leagues after missing all of 2024 with a knee injury that took two surgeries to repair.
He has only played in nine games for Triple-A Syracuse and played back-to-back games four times. His third base experience is limited; Mauricio played five games at third base during his September call-up in 2023, and has played the position nine times in the minor leagues.
Last week, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said he would like to continue to build up Mauricio’s workload in Triple-A. The club has also had concerns about his plate discipline as well.
“If he were 100 percent healthy and has had 200 plate appearances already this year, it’s a much easier decision,” Stearns said. “I don’t have in my mind like, he’s got to get to this plate appearance threshold before he’s an option. Once we do feel like he’s at that spot, if we’re going to bring him here, he’s got to play.”
