Mets’ Montas going to bullpen; McLean, Sproat in mix to replace him

Frankie Montas has been removed from the Mets’ starting rotation, manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday.

Montas is 3-2 with a 6.38 ERA in eight appearances, including seven starts. He will be available out of the bullpen as soon as Thursday.

The Mets have not determined Montas’ replacement, but top prospects Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat are “definitely in the conversation” to start Saturday against the Seattle Mariners, Mendoza said.

Monta’s lone relief appearance came last Saturday, when he entered in the second inning after opener Reed Garrett and surrendered three runs (one earned) in three innings in a 7-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
