Mets’ Pete Alonso extends HR streak, Juan Soto reaches 100 RBI vs. Padres

Brandon Nimmo has repeatedly described this year’s Mets as the most talented team he’s ever played for, but too often, their biggest bats haven’t synced up.

Juan Soto’s first two months in a Mets uniform could only be described as a slow start.

Francisco Lindor cooled off in June.

Pete Alonso endured an even colder July.

But with the Mets fighting to nail down the third and final National League wild card spot, their Fab Four, as owner Steve Cohen calls them, is coming together at the right time.

Nimmo, Soto, Lindor and Alonso each contributed to Thursday afternoon’s 6-1 win over the San Diego Padres at Citi Field.

Alonso started the scoring in the first inning with a 445-foot solo home run off of Randy Vasquez, marking the fourth game in a row that the fan-favorite first baseman has homered.

Lindor singled during the Mets’ four-run rally in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to seven games.

Soto’s run-scoring groundout in that inning gave the Mets a 2-1 lead and accounted for his 100th RBI of the season.

And the lefty-swinging Nimmo blew the game open with a three-run homer against left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta, putting the Mets up 5-1.

After Nimmo’s drive drove in Lindor and Alonso, the trio of longtime teammates embraced in the dugout and smiled as they posed for the camera.

Alonso added a seventh-inning sacrifice fly to cap the Mets’ scoring.

These are the types of offensive outbursts the Mets envisioned in the offseason when they signed Soto to a record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract and brought back Alonso for a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out.

Soto batted .229 with 10 home runs, 31 RBI and a .797 OPS through his first 62 games with the Mets, but he’s erupted for 31 homers and 69 RBI in 89 games since then.

Overall, Soto is hitting .263 with 41 homers, 100 RBI, a .922 OPS, 33 stolen bases, 119 walks and 119 runs.

He is the second Mets player to reach 100 RBI this season, joining Alonso, whose 121 RBI rank second in the National League.

The four consecutive games with a homer match a career best for Alonso, who also achieved the feat in August of 2019 and May of 2023.

Alonso started his latest home-run streak with a walk-off blast against the Texas Rangers on Sunday, which snapped the Mets’ season-worst eight-game losing streak.

Including that game, the Mets have now won three of their last four games.

Alonso is 6-for-14 with seven RBI in those four games, while Soto is 4-for-17 with a homer and three RBI.

Lindor is 5-for-13 with a homer and has scored five runs in the last four games, while Nimmo is 4-for-15 with two homers and five RBI.

Thursday’s home run was Nimmo’s 24th of the season, tying a career high.
