Missing Navy sailor Angelina Resendiz found dead in Virginia woods

The search for missing Navy Seaman Angelina Resendiz has ended in tragedy, with officials confirming a body found in a wooded area in Virginia earlier this week belongs to her.

Angelina Resendiz seemingly vanished from her barracks at a naval base in Norfolk on May 29, according to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS. She was reported missing days later on June 3, prompting Virginia State Police to issue a “critically missing adult alert.”

The Norfolk Medical Examiner identified her body on Tuesday, a day after the remains were found in a wooded part of the city, NBC News reported.

A Navy sailor, who was not identified, has charges pending under the Uniform Code of Military Justice in connection with the case, officials said Wednesday. No further details were provided, including Resendiz’s cause of death.

“NCIS remains committed to uncovering the facts surrounding the tragic death of Seaman Resendiz to ensure accountability and justice,” the department said.

Resendiz was a culinary specialist assigned to the USS James E. Williams and based at Naval Station Norfolk, according WTKR. Her loved ones have said her disappearance “left a void in their hearts” and that they “refuse to let her suffering be in vain,” a family spokesperson told WAVY.

“The family is calling on the assistance of the United States government, Senator Mark Warner, Senator Tim Kaine, the Hampton Roads congressional delegation, home congressman Vicente Gonzalez, and President Donald J. Trump to address the systemic issues that allowed her to vanish without justice since May 29, 2025,” the spokesperson said.
