The body of a beloved New Jersey teacher and high school tennis coach — missing since Dec. 4 — was found Tuesday in his vehicle, submerged in the Passaic River, authorities said.
Brian Kolakowski was 37.
His discovery capped several days of searching after the North Arlington resident was reported missing, the Kearny Police Department said. On Dec. 6, police scanning security camera footage saw his Volkswagen Jetta driving down a boat ramp and into the Passaic River, prompting “immediate recovery efforts,” police said in a statement.
The focus on the river intensified with the vehicle drifting south from the marina, turning over and finally sinking, police said. Recovery efforts were complicated by the car’s difficult-to-access depth and position amid “adverse weather conditions and poor underwater visibility” during the days-long search involving divers and other water experts.
“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that this incident was the result of any criminal act, nor is there any indication of a threat to public safety,” police said, asking for the public to come forward with any pertinent information. “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Brian Kolakowski.”
His loss reverberated throughout the community both in Kearny and in North Arlington, where he lived.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic discovery of Brian Kolakowski, who was reported missing earlier this month,” the town of Kearny said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to the dedicated first responders and recovery teams for their tireless efforts in bringing closure to the family. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Kolakowski’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Harrison Public Schools sent a letter to parents Tuesday about the teacher known for his mentorship and dedication both on and off the tennis court, the Newark Star-Ledger reported.
Students past and present mourned the teacher affectionately nicknamed Kola, with one remembering him in a Facebook post as her first volleyball coach, and another noting “how much Brian touched so many lives.”
“Mr. Kola was a beacon of light and positive energy to all who knew him and will be forever missed,” the town of Harrison stated.
