Monday $605M Powerball drawing is biggest jackpot of the year



Monday night’s $650 million Powerball drawing will be for the largest lottery jackpot so far this year.

The last jackpot claimed was in California on May 31, when a winner grossed $204.5 million. The biggest grand prize doled out this year was a $526.5 million windfall won in California in March. Two other winners have hit the jackpot in 2025.

The lump-sum cash value of Monday night’s drawing is more than $273 million, according to Powerball officials. Winner also have the option of collecting a larger amount in 30 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.

Monday’s ping-pong ball drawing happens live in Tallahassee, Fla. at 10:59 p.m. Participants holding a $2 ticket have a one in 292.2 million chance of guessing all six numbers right including the red Powerball. Smaller prizes are awarded for lesser matches.

The largest Powerball prize ever claimed was a $2.04 billion score in California in November 2022. The jackpot up for grabs Monday night wouldn’t crack the all-time top 10.

In December, a Flushing, Queens bettor became the first New Yorker to win a Powerball drawing since 2020 by bagging a $256 million jackpot. ottery officials said the winning ticket was purchased at Hua Lian Supermarket on Parsons Boulevard.

The first Powerball drawing took place on April 22, 1992 and included 15 states. New York joined the competition in 2010. There are now 45 states participating, along with Washington, D.C.; the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
