More arrests in hazing death of Southern U student Caleb Wilson

Two more arrests have been made in the death of Louisiana college student Caleb Wilson, who’s believed to have died following a fraternity hazing ritual in Baton Rouge.

Wilson, a 20-year-old junior at Southern University and A&M College, died last month after collapsing in a warehouse “as a direct result of a hazing incident where he was punched in the chest multiple times while pledging to Omega Psi Phi,” said Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse.

While Wilson was taken to a hospital in the early hours of Feb. 27, no one called 911 at any point after he collapsed, Morse said. The group who dropped him off said they’d been playing basketball at a public park and left the hospital before police arrived.

Caleb McCray, a member of the fraternity, turned himself into police last Thursday — roughly a week after Wilson’s death. The 23-year-old was charged with manslaughter and felony criminal hazing.

Two others were arrested this week.

Kyle Thurman was apprehended by U.S. Marshals and Baton Rouge Police on Monday night, while Isaiah Smith turned himself in on Tuesday, according to WDSU. Both were charged with criminal hazing and had their bonds set at $25,000.

The three men are accused of hitting the fraternity pledges multiple times with boxing gloves.

Wilson’s death came roughly five months after members of a fraternity at Penn State University were sentenced following the hazing death of Timothy Piazza, a New Jersey teen who died after drinking a large amount of alcohol and suffering multiple falls at the Beta Theta Pi house.
