Motorcyclist killed in Connecticut crash was fleeing bank robbery

A man who died in a motorcycle crash on an interstate in Connecticut on Wednesday was involved in a bank robbery earlier that day, police confirmed Thursday.

The robbery occurred around 11:20 a.m. at the Chelsea Groton Saving Bank in Stonington when a person entered the bank, implied he had a weapon and took an undisclosed amount of cash.

Witnesses said the robber then fled the scene on a blue motorcycle.

Roughly 13 minutes later, the suspect was involved in a fatal collision with the rear of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95. He was thrown from the blue Suzuki GSX-R1000 and pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was later identified as 52-year-old Shawn Twomey of New Haven.

“I just saw the motorcycle in several pieces in the middle of the road. A gentlemen laying in the road not moving,” witness Michele Morrell, who was working a road safety detail, told WSFB. “It took maybe five minutes for the first police vehicle to show up then they started moving traffic to one side so more emergency vehicles could come.”

The crash shut down I-95 for hours, causing significant traffic on the highway as well as detour roads.

The FBI is currently assisting Stonington police with the bank robbery aspect of the investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Stonington or state police.
