New York City released the first 40 sites of a citywide after-school expansion Tuesday— with the ultimate goal of making it universal.
The announcement builds on news in April that Mayor Adams would fund 5,000 more after-school slots — with a price tag of $21 million — in this fiscal year’s budget negotiated with the City Council.
The programs are open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade and expected to be operational by the first day of school in September.
“[For] too long,” Adams said at P.S. 152 The Evergreen School in the Bronx, “these families have not had access to affordable child care and after-school programming, forcing many of them to leave the city they love. So we listened.”
“Those 5,000 children in neighborhoods in most need will have a safe place and nurturing place to go when the school day ends.”
The expansion comes amid a greater focus on the city’s affordability crisis, fueled in part by families fleeing the five boroughs due to the cost of child care and mayoral candidates — most notably Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani — highlighting the issue through their campaigns.
Keith Howard, the commissioner of the Department of Youth and Community Development, said schools were prioritized for the new funding if they previously did not have an after-school program; serve low-income families and students with disabilities or learning English; or are located in high-crime neighborhoods.
The locations include 14 schools in the Bronx, 12 in Queens and 10 in Brooklyn. Manhattan and Staten Island are opening two new sites each.
Fulfilling the promise of an after-school program for any family who needs one is likely still many years away. If re-elected, Adams has committed to funding 20,000 more program slots over the next three school years, bringing the number of children in after-school to 184,000 — several hundreds of thousands of students short of the public school system’s total enrollment.
