One Garden State police officer was fatally shot and another wounded in a furious gun battle with at least one suspect in Newark on Friday night, according to sources and news reports.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said that two Garden State police officers were shot Friday night.
News 12 New Jersey reported that one of the officers initially was in critical condition but later died. The status of the other cop wasn’t immediately known.
“I have been updated on an incident that took place in Newark earlier tonight involving two officers that were shot,” the governor posted on social media.
He asked for prayers for the wounded officers in what he called a “rapidly developing situation.”
The wild gunfire happened at Carteret St. and Broadway around 6:30 p.m. near a White Castle burger place, according to police and news reports.
Both officers were reportedly rushed to University Hospital. It wasn’t immediately clear what precipitated the shootings.
PIX 11 said that a 14-year-old suspect was also shot during the encounter, though there were conflicting reports on whether he was killed. Multiple people were taken into custody.
