New NYC mayoral poll shows Mamdani holding sizable lead, Adams trailing in single digits

Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani holds a 15-point lead against his opponents, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

The Emerson College/PIX11/The Hill poll found that Mamdani captured 43% of voters, while ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo got 28%. GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa received 10% and Mayor Adams got 7%. Nine percent were undecided.

Nearly a quarter, or 23% of respondents, responded that there was a chance they could change their mind and vote for a different candidate. Adams voters were the most likely to shift allegiances, with 66% of supporters saying they will “definitely” support him.

The results of the Emerson poll come a day after another poll, by Siena College and the New York Times, that showed Mamdani winning the race by 22 points.

There’s been a push to try to thwart a Mamdani mayoralty by consolidating the race for a one-to-one matchup against the democratic socialist.

There are efforts underway to press the mayor to drop out to take a job in the Trump administration or in the private sector, the Daily News previously reported. But Adams has publicly maintained he will remain in the race. Sliwa, the Republican candidate who’s polling ahead of the mayor, has refused any ideas that he would step out of the race.

Cuomo has said he’s got the best chances of beating Mamdani, and has said those trailing should leave the race in order to make a run at Mamdani.

But even if the field was cleared, there would still be some challenges for a Mamdani opponent.

In a matchup tested in the poll with just Mamdani and Cuomo, 47% of voters supported Mamdani and 40% Cuomo, with 13% undecided. The Siena/NYT poll found Mamdani winning by a margin of 4 points, 48 to 44 pecrent.

Almost half of voters, or 48%, have a favorable opinion of Mamdani, while 34% have an unfavorable opinion, according to the survey. By comparison, 51% have an unfavorable view of Cuomo and 61% have a negative view of Adams.

The poll was conducted from Sept. 7 to 8 among 600 local registered voters. The credibility interval — which is similar to the margin of error — was 3.9 points.

Voters named the economy and “threats to democracy” as their top issues.
