Newark airport unexpectedly shut down

All flights out of Newark Airport appeared to be cancelled or extremely delayed on Sunday, effectively shutting down the airport for hours.

The delays were caused by thunderstorms, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, but the day was sunny with clear skies into the evening.

Stranded travelers took to social media to complain about the unexpected delay, with many blaming President Trump’s presence in the area to attend the FIFA World Cub final match in East Rutherford, N.J.

The president’s official schedule listed him as attending the World Cup from between 2:30 p.m. until 7:25 p.m. when he was slated to depart and head back to the White House.

Flights at Newark Airport started being impacted around 3:15 p.m., with delays expected to last until the early morning hours, according to the FAA.
