Nick Reiner’s arraignment in the murders of his father and mother, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, is scheduled to take place Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Reiner, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder. He is expected to plead not guilty in the case. The proceedings could also be delayed due to Reiner’s mental health.
Otherwise, the next step will be a preliminary hearing in which prosecutors would lay out the evidence against Reiner ahead of a potential trial.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead on Dec. 14 at their home in Los Angeles’ upscale Brentwood neighborhood. Nick Reiner was arrested a few hours later and accused of killing them.
He made his first court appearance on Dec. 17 but did not enter a plea. At that hearing, he appeared in court wearing a suicide prevention smock, but he has reportedly since been taken off suicide watch.
Reiner’s defense attorney is Alan Jackson, who previously represented Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey among other high-profile figures, along with his past career as a Los Angeles County prosecutor.
“We ask that during this process, you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed,” Jackson said in a statement last month.
Prosecutors could seek the death penalty in the case under California law, but Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said that decision would be made later.
Reiner and his father have previously talked about his struggles with drug addiction. They worked together on a 2016 film, “Being Charlie,” that showed a father struggling with how to support his addict son.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” the Reiners’ other children, Jake and Romy, said in a statement. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
