Nick Reiner hires attorney, not medically cleared for court

Nick Reiner, who’s accused of murdering his father, director and actor Rob Reiner, and his mother, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, has hired defense attorney Alan Jackson.

Jackson confirmed his hiring Tuesday morning outside Los Angeles Superior Court, where he told reporters that his client would not be making a scheduled court appearance that day because he hadn’t been medically cleared to be transported from where he’s being held to the courthouse, according to CNN.

Jackson did not elaborate on why Reiner hadn’t been cleared or when he would appear in court, but described the situation as “day to day.”

Reiner, 32, is facing two counts of murder in connection with the slayings but hasn’t been formally arraigned. He’s being held without bail at the Men’s Central Jail, Jackson said.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the case would be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review on Tuesday.

A high-profile attorney, Jackson has previously counted Karen Read, Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein as clients. Prior to becoming a defense attorney, Jackson was the lead prosecutor in the murder case against the music producer Phil Spector.

Reiner was arrested on Sunday, several hours after the “When Harry Met Sally” director and his wife were found stabbed to death at their Brentwood-area home. He was apprehended about 15 miles away near the University of Southern California campus.

The bodies were discovered by the couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy, according to People.

Nick Reiner has a history of substance abuse and mental illness, according to reports.
