A New Jersey man has been convicted of murder and related charges in the 2022 shooting of a music producer in a recording studio, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Ronin A. Nevels, 25, of Lindenwold, was accused of fatally shooting 23-year-old Isaiah Shaw, of Winslow Township, in the late hours of Sept. 30, 2022, Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Lindenwold Police Chief Michael McCarthy Jr. said in a joint statement.
According to police, Shaw was killed after being shot in the head inside IAO Studios, located on the 2500 block of Egg Harbor Road in Lindenwold, just outside the Philadelphia metro area.
Officers arrived at the scene shortly before 10 p.m. after reports of a shooting. They found Shaw with a gunshot wound to the head, prosecutors said. He was later pronounced dead.
During the investigation, detectives collected evidence and took witness statements that identified Nevels as the person responsible for the fatal shooting. He was arrested the following day at a home in Gloucester Township.
Prosecutors said Nevels barricaded himself inside the residence but surrendered after negotiating with the Special Response Team from Gloucester Township police.
Last week, after a four-week jury trial in Camden County Superior Court, a jury found Nevels guilty of first-degree murder, criminal trespass and weapons charges, MacAulay said. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 11.
Shaw worked as a contractor for Safe Haven Security at the time of his death, but his true passion was music, where he was known as “DJ Zay,” according to an online obituary.
As the CEO and founder of his label, Colossal Records, Shaw helped “produce beats” for up-and-coming hip-hop artists in New Jersey, the obituary reads.
