A New Jersey man who led cops on a highway car chase and then opened fire on officers last month was wanted for murder, authorities revealed Wednesday.
Mark Boyd, 45, of East Orange, was identified as the suspect in the Nov. 9 incident that began in the Meadowlands but ended in Orange, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said in a press release.
Boyd was wanted for a 2023 murder in Bloomfield, NJ.com reported. He had already been charged in the case but was not arrested.
In the November incident, New Jersey state troopers attempted to stop a 2024 Acura TLX near American Dream Mall after identifying it as stolen, authorities said. Boyd was driving the Acura and took off south on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Boyd later exited the turnpike for Interstate 280 before getting off the highway in Orange, cops said. He then struck a civilian vehicle, and state troopers surrounded his car.
The troopers heard a gunshot and took cover, then Boyd drove his car into a marked state police vehicle, according to the attorney general’s office. Troopers responded by opening fire on Boyd. He then got out of the vehicle and took off on foot, exchanging fire with two cops before finally being arrested.
Some bystanders captured the dramatic shootout and foot chase on video, which was aired on local news at the time. Boyd was the only person injured in the firefight.
At the time of the incident, Boyd was out on parole for a 2002 firefight with police, according to NJ.com. He remains hospitalized due to wounds from the Nov. 9 shootout.
