NJ teenager dies in ski accident in western Massachusetts

A New Jersey teenager attending college in Massachusetts died in a skiing accident in the Berkshires, authorities announced Wednesday.

Alex Kemp, 19, was skiing at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock, Mass., on Monday when he went over an embankment, the Boston Globe reported. Kemp sustained severe head trauma in the crash, according to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office.

First responders reached the scene, about 25 miles east of Albany, shortly after Kemp went over. He was rushed to a local hospital but pronounced dead on Tuesday, according to the Berkshire Eagle.

Kemp was wearing a helmet when he crashed, and no drugs or alcohol were found in his system, the D.A.’s office said.

Kemp was a freshman at Williams College, just north of the ski resort. He attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy near his home in Lincroft, N.J. At Williams, he ran on the school’s cross country team.

At the NCAA Division III cross country championships in November, Kemp was the top freshman finisher at the event, according to Williams.

“Alex had a self-assured, positive, kind way about him and it was consistent every day,” cross country coach Dusty Lopez said in a statement. “He loved being at Williams, being part of our team, and he always knew how to bring others along with him.”

Kemp’s death was the second time a young person died at a New England ski resort in the past two weeks. On Dec. 31, a 12-year-old boy was killed while skiing at Cranmore Mountain in Conway, N.H.
