NY appeals court throws out roughly half-billion dollar judgment against Trump in civil fraud case


A New York appeals court on Thursday threw out the roughly half-billion-dollar judgment imposed on President Trump and his namesake real estate empire, finding it was so large as to be unconstitutional.

“While the injunctive relief ordered by the court is well crafted to curb defendants’ business culture,” the First Department, Appellate Division found, the half-billion-dollar sum Trump and his top business execs were ordered to pay New York “violates the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution.”

Trump and co were ordered to pay the penalty in February 2024 in a civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James after being found liable for breaking multiple state laws by fraudulently ballooning Trump’s net worth by billions in business deals with banks and lenders to obtain better terms.

Spokespeople for Trump and James did not immediately respond to the Daily News’s requests for comment.
