NY boy, 13, arrested for murder in Newburgh shooting

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested for second-degree murder in the shooting of an 11-year-old at a home in Newburgh, N.Y., officials said Friday.

The incident occurred Thursday morning when Newburgh police responded to a home on North Miller Street for reports of a shooting.

Officers arrived around 8:15 a.m. and found an 11-year-old boy “who was deceased from a gunshot wound,” Newburgh police said in a news release. The boy has not been publicly identified.

During an investigation, Newburgh detectives recovered a firearm and identified three juveniles of interest, who were “quickly located by police,” Newburgh officials said.

Within 12 hours of the shooting, police arrested a 13-year-old boy on a second-degree murder charge.

The shooting allegedly happened when the boy and some of his friends were playing with a gun brought into the home by his older brother, law enforcement sources told NBC New York.

The victim’s brother, believed to be between 12 and 14 years old, allegedly ran off after being confronted by their mother about having the gun, but was later located, ABC 7 reported.

According to police, the 13-year-old suspect is not related to the victim.

The incident remains under investigation, Newburgh police said. Anyone with information is asked to call the City of Newburgh Detective Division at (845) 569-7519. All calls may remain anonymous, officials said.

The City of Newburgh, in Orange County, is about 60 miles north of Midtown Manhattan.
