A New York driver struck and killed a construction worker in Greenwich, Conn., in the early hours of Saturday, officials said.
The work zone crash occurred on I-95 North near Exit 3 just before 2:30 a.m.
Traymont Tucker, 38, of Waterbury, was working within the construction zone when a Dodge Durango veered into the area and struck him, state troopers said in an accident information summary.
Tucker, who was working as a private construction worker, was pronounced dead at the scene just before 3 a.m., officials said.
The driver, 38-year-old Osvaldo Vela, of Yonkers, N.Y., reported minor injuries and was taken to Stamford Hospital by Greenwich EMS personnel.
Garrett Eucalitto, commissioner of the state’s Department of Transportation, released a statement late Saturday morning expressing condolences to Tucker’s family and friends, saying the “entire agency grieves with all those impacted by this morning’s horrific event.”
“This tragedy underscores how dangerous working on the highway is and how critical it is for everyone to do their part to keep workers safe. It is simply unacceptable that these preventable tragedies keep occurring,” Eucalitto said. “We need the public to follow the Slow Down, Move Over law; stay alert; and drive sober. These actions save lives.”
No charges had been filed as of early Saturday afternoon. The incident remains under investigation, officials said.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call Troop G at 203-696-2500 or email Trooper George Lyman at George.Lyman@ct.gov.
