A man was killed and a suspect was taken into custody Saturday following a 13-hour standoff in upstate New York, according to local police.
Onondaga County deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Salina, just north of Syracuse, shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Friday for a reported stabbing, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told Syracuse.com.
Deputies arrived at the scene and located a male victim with stab wounds to his upper body, officials said. The man was taken to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.
While the victim was being transported to the hospital, the stabbing suspect barricaded himself inside the home and refused to come out, prompting a multi-agency response. Members of the Onondaga County SWAT team, as well as firefighters from the Liverpool, Mattydale and Cicero fire departments, responded to the scene, CNY Central reported.
Negotiations with the suspect lasted more than 13 hours, authorities said. During that time, he set multiple fires inside the home, badly damaging the structure. Nearby neighbors had to be evacuated, and around 20 flash bangs were heard late Friday, according to reports.
At around 5 a.m. Saturday, SWAT team members, with the assistance of drone and K‑9 units, were eventually able to breach the home and take the suspect into custody.
The unidentified man was arrested in the attic and later received medical attention, officials said. There are no reports of additional injuries.
Deputies have not confirmed whether the suspect has been formally charged. An investigation remains ongoing and additional details will be released as they become available, officials said.
