A New York City man has been arrested and accused of driving a New Jersey murder suspect to the Mexican border, authorities said Tuesday.
Jorlyn Paulino, 34, was detained Friday in Manhattan for assisting Joshua Alvarado, who fled the country after allegedly killing a man in Englewood, N.J., in 2023, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s office said in a press release.
Alvarado, now 31, fatally shot 35-year-old Jason Hidalgo on Sept. 30, 2023, in Englewood, just across the George Washington Bridge from New York, according to authorities.
Investigators quickly determined Alvarado had fled the country after the shooting, but cops caught up with him in Medellin, Colombia, in February 2024, and he was extradited back to New Jersey in December 2025, the prosecutor’s office said.
Alvarado was able to make his initial escape because Paulino drove him to the border almost immediately after the shooting, police said. The quickest route from Englewood to Mexico is a 30-hour, nearly 2,000-mile drive to Nuevo Laredo in the Rio Grande Valley.
Paulino was charged with third-degree hindering apprehension and jailed in New York pending extradition to New Jersey. Alvarado is facing charges of first-degree murder, second-degree armed burglary and several weapons crimes. He remains behind bars in Bergen County.
Authorities have not publicly speculated on a motive for the killing of Hidalgo. Both Alvarado and Hidalgo were also New York residents.
