NYPD cop wounded by friendly fire arresting Queens carjacker released from hospital

An NYPD detective wounded by friendly fire trying to thwart a carjacker in Queens was released from the hospital Monday to applause from scores of fellow cops.

Det. Corey Fisher left Jamaica Hospital, his pregnant wife by his side, in a wheelchair and was taken home to continue his recovery from gunshot wounds to his arm and leg.

“The prognosis is good,” said Dr. Katherine McKenzie, the hospital’s trauma medical director. “It could be weeks to months before he’s really back feeling like himself again.”

Carjacking suspect Kevin Dubuisson, 28, is charged with robbery, menacing and assault.

The four-time ex-con on Friday morning allegedly carjacked an Uber driver on the Whitestone Expressway in Whitestone, prompting a police response by both patrol officers and Fisher and others who are assigned to Queens Narcotics and were in the area, police said.

Suspect carjacker Kevin Dubuisson didn’t have a firearm, cops confirmed. He attacked the Uber driver with a metal object, and had motioned to his pockets as if he had a gun when confronting his prior victims, but it wasn’t clear if he had the metal object in his hands when police opened fire.

Dubuisson had minutes earlier tried and failed to carjack two other drivers and the night before jumped a turnstile in Manhattan and stole two cars, later crashing one of them, according to police.

Scott Munro, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, said legislators need to amend criminal justice laws so that repeat felons spend more time behind bars.

“It’s a positive thing, that he’s going home,” Munro said of Fisher. “But it’s a very negative thing that this is happening.”
