Online videos appearing to show Idaho mass murderer Bryan Kohberger going about his daily routine in solitary confinement have sparked an investigation.
“We are aware of the videos circulating online and are investigating the matter,” officials with the Idaho Department of Corrections said in a statement Friday. “While we cannot yet confirm the veracity of the videos, if verified, they are a clear violation of IDOC policy and the parties responsible will be held accountable, up to and including termination.”
Authorities warn that the videos making the rounds could be AI-enhanced or otherwise fake.
The IODC said emails had been sent to staff reminding them it’s prohibited to publicly sharing security footage from inside a corrections facility and that anyone who violates that rule could face criminal charges.
“The safety and security of our staff and incarcerated population remain our top priority,” officials said.
Kohberger was ordered to serve four consecutive life sentences on July 23 after he pleaded guilty to slaying University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin at an off-campus home in the early hours of Nov. 13, 2022.
The allegedly leaked footage of Kohberger in his cell comes amid reports that other prisoners have been menacing the 30-year-old former PhD student.
Sources told CBS News on Friday that inmates at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution outside Boise have been harassing him through air vents around the clock since he arrived.
Kohberger, who’s confined to his cell for 23 hours each day, has reportedly complained to prison officials.
Two of Concalves’ family members gave victim impact statements at his sentencing that expressed their hopes Kohberger would experience sexual violence during his incarceration.
