Two people were killed when an out-of-control car with stolen license plates vaulted onto a bustling Chinatown sidewalk Saturday morning, police said.
The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet Impala involved in the 7:30 a.m. crash were taken into custody after they tried to leave the area on foot, police said. A witness to the crash pointed them out to arriving police officers as they made their escape.
Both the driver and passenger were taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Witnesses told police that the Impala had just got off the Manhattan Bridge when the driver lost control and careened onto the sidewalk, where it struck a woman and a man riding a bicycle.
The car struck an unoccupied NYPD van before coming to a stop, cops said.
Both the man and the woman died at the scene. Their names were not immediately disclosed.
The car, police sources said, had stolen license plates on it.
Criminal charges on the driver and the passenger were pending Saturday.
