The Mets were almost back on track.
The Amazins nearly snapped a five-game losing streak thanks to three solo homers — including Pete Alonso’s franchise record-tying bomb — but the MLB-best Brewers proved to be too much as they were defeated by some late-inning heroics in their 7-4 loss.
Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Sal Frelick tied the game on an RBI groundout before the wheels fell off. Isaac Collins lined a hard single off the glove of Ronny Mauricio at third base to score Joey Ortiz as the go-ahead run. Then, William Contreras delivered the exclamation point with a two-run bomb off of Ryan Helsley giving them a 7-4 lead.
The Mets struggles continue as their losing streak now reached six, even overshadowing a historic night for the franchise.
Alonso’s 252nd career blast joined Darryl Strawberry atop the Mets’ all-time list and 26th of the season in the second inning jumped them out to an early 1-0 lead. Juan Soto’s go-ahead shot in the 5th proved to be the difference as the $765 million man has broken out of his rut. The 26-year-old’s 28th shot of the season marked his third straight game with a homer.
Starling Marte also tallied a solo blast in the third inning, his sixth of the season
Carlos Mendoza turned to a bullpen game with the struggling Frankie Montas as the bulk-man. Montas tossed three innings, allowing three runs, one earned with three strikeouts.
The club fell further back in the AL East standings to now 4.5 games back with the Philadelphia Phillies defeating the Texas Rangers.
Mendoza will call on Sean Manaea to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon. Manaea is making his sixth start of the season as he’s pitched to a 3.52 ERA this season. Breakout pitcher Quinn Priester will take the ball for Pat Murphy’s squad. Priester is 11-2 with a 3.15 ERA.
