Police fatally shoot man outside NJ home, find 3 dead inside

A knife-wielding suspect in New Jersey was fatally shot by police near a Piscataway home, where they later discovered three bodies inside, officials said.

Officers from the Piscataway Police Department were called on Monday to the residence, located near the intersection of Mitchell Avenue and River Road, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. When they arrived on the scene around 5:30 p.m., authorities were met by an armed man, who has not been identified at this time. Sources told NBC New York that the suspect immediately fled from the porch, leading officers on a brief foot chase before he charged at them with a knife.

Officers then attempted to subdue him with stun guns, but they did not work and the suspect continued to advance. At that point, authorities opened fire, fatally striking the man, NBC New York reported. He was pronounced dead in the street a short time later.

“They told him to stop several times; they gave him commands to stop,” Jessica Conroy, who lives nearby, told the station.

None of the responding officers were hurt during the confrontation, police said.

Following the shooting, authorities discovered three bodies inside the home. They have not yet been identified, but sources told ABC 7 a pair of grandparents were among the dead. It is not yet clear what relationship they had with the suspect, if any.

No one involved has yet been identified.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing, but authorities do not believe the public to be in any danger at this time.
