Princess Anne’s husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, has been honored with one of the highest ranks in the Royal Victorian Order by King Charles.
Laurence’s major promotion makes him the first member of the Firm to be awarded the Insignia of a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) since Princess Catherine, who received the honor from the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.
In an intimate ceremony at Balmoral Castle on Aug. 21, the king invested Laurence with the GCVO.
The title, which is personally granted by monarchs to recognize distinguished service to the royal family, means he now ranks alongside the Princess of Wales and Queen Camilla.
Laurence, 70, has been married to the Princess Royal, 75, since 1992. He is widely respected for both his role within the royal household, as well as his experience as a Royal Navy officer.
The coveted title was founded by Queen Victoria in 1896. The Knight Grand Cross, specifically, is the highest grade within the order.
The royal promotion comes during a rumored restructuring of the monarchy, led by Charles and heir to the throne, Prince William.
The king recently honored his wife, Queen Camilla, with the prestigious title of Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom in celebration of her 78th birthday.

The move was an unprecedented one, as Her Majesty became the first woman to hold the title, which can only be appointed by a sovereign.
The honorary title must first be nominated by the First Sea Lord, a post currently held by Sir Gwyn Jenkins, who said the queen’s new role will “further enhance Her Majesty’s relationship with the Service.”
“We are honored to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to HM Naval Base Devonport,” he said in an official statement on July 16.
“Her Majesty’s visit has been a tremendous boost to morale, and the honorary appointment reflects the high regard in which Her Majesty is held by all of us.”
It’s not the first royal title Camilla has received from her devoted husband.
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, Charles famously named his wife the Queen Consort — making her the first in more than eight decades.
His Majesty took it a step further in the months that followed, as he issued a Royal Warrant to change his wife’s title to “Queen Camilla” in time for their joint coronation on May 6, 2023.
