Princess Josephine of Denmark makes surprise decision about future

Princess Josephine of Denmark is paving her own path within the royal fold.

The 14-year-old royal, who is the youngest daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, has chosen to enroll in a new school for the upcoming year — marking a dramatic break from tradition.

The Danish Royal House announced Monday that the princess has submitted a personal request to continue her studies at a boarding school in Jutland, Denmark, where she will go into the 8th grade.

“HRH Princess Josephine has chosen, at her own request, to continue her education in the 8th grade at Spir Efterskole,” read an official statement from the palace.

The move marks a milestone within the Danish royal family, as Josephine is the first among her siblings to live away from home for her education.

The princess had been attending Kildegård Private School since 2023.

Spir Efterskole is located about three hours away from Amalienborg Palace, which served as the Danish royal family’s main residence until recently.

The Danish Royal House also revealed education plans for the rest of the royal children, including Crown Prince Christian, 19, Princess Isabella, 18, and Josephine’s twin brother, Prince Vincent.

“HRH The Crown Prince continues his education in the Armed Forces, while the Royal Couple’s other three children begin a new school year,” the statement read.

Palace officials revealed that Crown Prince Christian is set to return to Antvorskov Barracks in Slagelse to complete his mandatory military service in Slagelse, a town located roughly 80 miles away.

Meanwhile, Princess Isabella will continue her education at Øregård Gymnasium, from which Crown Prince Christian graduated in June 2024. She is expected to graduate next summer.

The announcement comes just months after the Danish royals bid farewell to their longtime official residence, instead moving into the regal Fredensborg Palace — their summer residence located on the shore of Esrum Lake.

The family moved into the eastern wing of the palace, known as the Chancellery House, in May.

The sprawling estate, which is located on Zealand island in Denmark, boasts gardens that cover nearly 300 acres of land.

Frederik and Mary had previously lived at Chancellery from 2004 until 2010, while he was still the Crown Prince. At the time, Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen was being refurbished.

But their unusual move intrigued royal watchers, who questioned why the family took up the smaller residence at the palace while former monarch Queen Margrethe — who abdicated in January 2024 — moved into the main house.
