South Carolina prison guards posted a photo of a special delivery they claim to have intercepted en route to inmates at Lee Correctional Institution.
“Seems some folks were planning an early holiday Old Bay crab boil and steak dinner along with their marijuana and cigarettes — all dropped by a drone at Lee CI,” South Carolina Corrections officials captioned a photo posted to social media on Monday.
The contraband care package appeared to include a carton of Lucky Strikes and Marlboro menthol cigarettes, a bag of rolling tobacco, a sealed package of beef, and crab legs. A plastic Piggly Wiggly shopping bag and liquid container were also pictured.
It’s not clear if authorities know who sent — or who was hoping to receive — the Christmas package.
Lee CI houses roughly 1,800 high and medium security federal inmates in Bishopville, S.C. Local station WIS-10 reported Wednesday the prison was investigating its second suspected homicide in a week.
A 2018 riot at the facility involving at least 47 prisoners left seven inmates dead and more than 20 injured. ABC affiliate WCIV reported a year later that the prison had undergone a massive security upgrade that included measures designed to stop contraband from reaching inmates. That reportedly included 50-foot nets, a surveillance drone and cell phone detection towers.
