Queens man gets 15 years for murder of Jersey City teen

A New York City man has been sentenced to 15 years in New Jersey State Prison for the 2022 fatal shooting of a Jersey City teenager, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Justin Goris, 20, of Queens, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a charge of aggravated murder in the death of 15-year-old Devin Bryant, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.

Jersey City police officers responded to the Bergen-Lafayette section of the city for reports of shots fired on Feb. 12, 2022. When responding officers arrived at the scene, they found a male victim just outside a building on 112 Myrtle Ave. with an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim, later identified as Bryant, was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. He was pronounced dead just after 9 p.m.

The Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office said he died due to a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His death was determined to be a homicide, officials said.

Goris, who was 17 years old at the time of the fatal shooting, was arrested on March 30, 2022. He was initially charged as a juvenile with murder, aggravated assault and weapon offenses.

On Monday, Hudson County Superior Court Judge Mitchell Pascual sentenced him to 15 years in state prison.

Under the state’s No Early Release Act, or NERA, Goris will only be eligible for parole after serving 85% of the sentence — or 12 years and nine months.
