This is no fairy tale.
Disney hosted a scaled back promotional event for the live-action “Snow White” film in Segovia, Spain, on Wednesday, instead of throwing a major red carpet premiere for the controversial movie.
Lead star Rachel Zegler and director Marc Webb attended the event, held at a remote medieval castle called Alcázar of Segovia, which was the inspiration for the castle in the original 1937 “Snow White” film.
Disney said that press, content creators, children and their families from Spanish CSR Organizations, and families from Segovia were also at the event.
Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, was not in attendance.
The Post has reached out to Gadot’s rep for comment.
In front of the castle, Zegler, 23, performed “Waiting on a Wish,” the first single from the film’s original soundtrack.
The actress channeled her Disney character by wearing a white sleeveless dress with a floral print and a flowing train.
Due to multiple controversies, Disney has opted not to have over-the-top premieres to promote the fantasy film, out March 21.
Variety reported this week that the March 15 premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles will be a quiet, laid-back pre-party and screening limited to photographers and an in-house crew.
Zegler and Galdot, 39, are both expected to be at the event, but they won’t be answering questions from dozens of media outlets.
Webb’s “Snow White” movie has been facing yearslong scrutiny. It began with Disney’s decision to replace the fairy tale’s seven dwarfs with CGI to “avoid reinforcing stereotypes” from the 1937 film.
Critics accused the company of being too “politically correct” and “woke.” They also were upset that Zegler, a Latina actress, was cast as the lead.
“Game of Thrones” actor Peter Dinklage, who has dwarfism, had his own critiques for Disney.
“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback [when] they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’” the actor, 55, said on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast in 2022.
He added, “You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f–king backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the f–k are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”
Zegler went on to face criticism for calling the original animated “Snow White” “extremely dated,” and declared that the remake wouldn’t highlight her character as a damsel in distress.
The “West Side Story” star later addressed the public’s concerns in an interview with Vogue Mexico in February.
“I interpret people’s feelings about this film as passion for it, and what an honor to be able to be a part of something that people are so passionate about,” Zegler told the outlet. “We’re not always going to have the same feelings as everyone around us and all we can do is give our best.”
Additionally, Zegler sparked backlash for going on a social media rant against those who voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 election, which led to more people threatening to boycott the film.
“Disney’s lead actress is out of control,” a movie insider told Page Six. “They don’t know what to do … she’s an outspoken 20-something and Disney chiefs have called her directly and asked her to tone down her posts. They’ve called her management, but she won’t listen.
“It’s been this way the entire way through filming. But it’s the tying of her politics to ‘Snow White’ that is upsetting.”
David Hale Hand, whose late father, Disney animator David Hand, was the supervising director for the original 1937 “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” has also spoken out.
“The original was the way it should be. From what I’ve read, [the new film] bears no reflection to the original story,” Hand, 93, said. “It’s so far off base that it’s ridiculous.”
“They’ve taken it and moved into the politics of what is woke … They’re taking a beautiful and beautifully drawn story and destroying what was ‘Snow White.’ Why can’t they just leave it alone instead of coming up with a different story — make it a totally different character?” Hand’s wife, Sandra Hand, added. “David’s father took so much pride in the film and he would say, ‘What have you done?’”
David even thinks that the changes would make his father and Walt Disney “roll in their graves.”
