Randy Moss is stepping away from ESPN to deal with an undisclosed health condition.
“Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss will step away from ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ for an extended time to focus on a personal health challenge,” ESPN reporter Adam Schefter posted on social media Friday.
The network said Moss “briefly addressed the matter” at the start of Sunday’s show.
The 47-year-old wide receiver said he’s battling “something internal” without offering much more information, other than saying viewers noticed a yellowing of his eyes. Moss closed his statement by urging everyone to “do your check-ups, get you bloodwork done.”
He’s expected to return to ESPN at some point in the future.
“For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, consistently elevating ‘Countdown’ with his insight and passion,” the network said. “He has ESPN’s full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready.”
Moss exploded onto the professional football scene in 1998 when he caught 17 touchdowns en route to being named Offensive Rookie of the Year. He was voted to the Pro Bowl six times and played for five teams before retiring in 2012.
Moss still holds the NFL record for touchdown receptions in a single season. He hauled down 23 scoring passes in 2007 while playing with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
