“Locked Up” rapper Akon was briefly arrested in Georgia last week on a bench warrant allegedly stemming from a suspended license and a prior failure to appear.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to TMZ on Wednesday that Chamblee police arrested the Grammy-nominated “Konvicted” artist shortly after 11 a.m. Friday on an out-of-county warrant linked to an incident from September.
According to police reports obtained by Fox 5 Atlanta, the rapper was approached that month when cops on patrol in Roswell, Ga. spotted his Cybertruck stopped in the middle of a road, which he attributed to a dead battery.
While waiting for a tow truck to arrive, police allegedly discovered that Akon was driving with a suspended license from a failure to appear back in January 2023, according to TMZ. Officers at the time issued him a citation and impounded his vehicle, in addition to seizing what they said was “an illegal vape” found in the center console.
Though he was released from the scene, cops later tracked him down when cameras alerted law enforcement that a vehicle registered to someone with a bench warrant was outside the Tint World in Chamblee.
Police arrived and reportedly took Akon into custody without incident. He was booked into the Smyrna City Jail but released just a few hours later, according to Fox 5.
It’s unclear when Akon is scheduled to appeared in court or whether he might face further charges. The rapper has not publicly commented on the incident.
