Up-and-coming rapper FastCash CMoney was killed over the weekend in a shootout in Memphis, roughly a month before he was scheduled to be released from federal probation.
The shooting occurred around 12:20 a.m. Sunday in the neighborhood of Frayser, on the north side of the city, according to Memphis police. Footage obtained by several local outlets shows multiple cars unleashing a hail of bullets in the direction of several homes and then fleeing the scene.
Responding officers later found CMoney shot to death about a half a mile away, reported Fox 13 Memphis.
CMoney, whose real name was Cordney Smith, was previously convicted of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in 2019, along with 17 other associates of the FastCashBoyz entertainment label.
He eventually served 18 months in prison before being released on federal probation. His probation was scheduled to end on Sept. 29, according to TMZ.
CMoney was part of the duo known as the FastCashBoyz, alongside rapper Jizzle. He was also a father trying to turn his life around and was encouraging others to do the same, his family told Fox 13.
“Throwing your life away is not gangster, that’s being stupid,” he wrote on Facebook in June. “Going to jail is not cool, doing time is not cool, having 1000 opps is not cool. Get you some money, have some kids and build you a legacy, live for something and set you some goals. Life is beautiful and you only got one of ’em.”
A GoFundMe set up by the rapper’s family described CMoney as “a loving father [and] a loyal friend” whose “dedication to his children [was] unmatched.” They’re asking for donations to help cover funeral expenses and provide for his children’s needs.
