Readers sound off on a Giants great, releasing the Epstein files and understanding poverty

Give weary Giants fans something to celebrate

Melville, L.I.: Kudos to Voicer Stephen Louro for his insightful commentary on the state of New York football during another abysmal year in which both teams are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs before Veterans Day.

N.Y. football fans need something to talk about around the family dinner table and office parties during the holidays. And since competitive football is clearly off the table, can we at least talk about the possibility of O.J. Anderson getting elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which is clearly the most egregious HOF snub in NFL history?

I see on the schedule that the Giants host the Vikings on Sunday, Dec. 21. That would be the perfect late-season/early Christmas present the Mara family could give the fans during this lost season: O.J. Anderson Hall of Fame Awareness Day. The problem with Anderson’s Hall of Fame candidacy is that his career was so awesome that if you polled most knowledgeable fans, the majority would say he’s already in the PFHOF! That Dec. 21 Sunday afternoon pre-Christmas game would be the perfect opportunity to reunite the aging Bill Parcells’ Giants and pay homage to their former Super Bowl MVP, giving him this HOF push that both he and the fans deserve.

In light of putting another “soft as f--k” product on the field, is it too much to ask of Giants management to help correct this historical wrong and give us fans a look back at what real “smash-mouth” football looked like? Matt Lulley

Not a good look

Tarrytown, N.Y.: It was comical seeing a bunch of New York Giants at the WWE “Monday Night Raw” event. Even more surprising to see some of the players actually participating in the action. Recently, the NFL has been facing daily backlash of being scripted, rigged and manipulated. Why would it risk its stellar reputation associating itself with the WWE, a known scripted and manipulated sporting event? The NFL amassed $23 billion in league-wide revenue in 2024, while the WWE generated $2 billion a year. We all understand the way cross-promotion works. The NFL is out to lunch on this one, and the 2-9 Giants are driving the clown car. Stephen Talenti

Disarm illegal drivers

Brooklyn: The young woman who mowed down a mother and two children could serve as little as three years in prison, even though she has a laundry list of driving offenses (” ‘Callous & reckless,’ ” Nov. 18). Perhaps, whenever someone drives while impaired or their license is suspended, their car should be impounded. The inconvenience might make them think twice before reoffending. Ilsa Ruthen

Keep the promise

Manhattan: To Mayor Adams: During your 2021 campaign, you spoke passionately about what you saw as a betrayal of New York City’s municipal workers, calling out the bait-and-switch that pushed them toward Medicare Advantage — a system that even Medicare has warned is plagued by abusive up-coding and inflated costs to taxpayers. But once in office, you made the same choice. And the retirees who gave this city their time, their health and the best years of their lives were told they also must give up the coverage they were promised. Mr. Mayor, before you leave office, I’m asking — truly asking — that you correct this. These retirees kept their end of the bargain for decades. Please keep the city’s promise to them. Restore the traditional Medicare they earned with a lifetime of service. Suzy Sandor

Scoring grace

Merion Station, Pa.: President Trump granted blanket clemency to nearly 1,600 people convicted of or awaiting trial/sentencing for offenses related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Trump’s Justice Department recently brought questionable charges against two of his personal enemies, James Comey and Letitia James. He sued the DOJ for bringing charges against him while at the same time pardoning disgraced former Rep. George Santos, Rudy Giuliani and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. Now Trump has pardoned a nursing home executive, a person who threatened FBI agents, and a Jan. 6 rioter convicted of a gun charge, among others. Trump burns the midnight oil reading from his “God Bless the U.S.A. Bible” as he is laser-focused on this passage from Deuteronomy 16:20, “Justice, Justice, shall you pursue.” Or perhaps, Trump’s anticipating his own judicial reckoning and hopes that “Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.” Paul L. Newman

Seeking release

Cincinnati: Jeffrey Epstein was a vile person who cast a wide net among many respectable people, including a president and former president, prominent politicians, lawyers, investment gurus and university officials. All have been stained with his stench, most as guilty by innocent association. Investigation of the relationships between Epstein and Trump, Epstein and Larry Summers, Epstein and Hakeem Jeffries and Epstein and whoever else you desire to stain will hopefully ferret out the truth. But will the truth set you free? Paul Bloustein

Nonsensical narrative

Bronx: Maybe someone can help me with this. Trump said the Epstein business was a Democratic hoax, and now he’s accusing, and making the DOJ go after, Democrats for being involved with Epstein. To put these two statements together: The Democrats are pedophiles that made up a hoax about the things they were doing with Epstein — to draw attention to themselves? Randall Borra

To what end?

Brooklyn: No one dislikes Trump more than I do. He is racist, misogynistic, narcissistic and heartless, and those are his good points. However, I don’t really understand why time and money are being wasted on the Epstein files. We already know Trump is a sleaze bag, and that no matter what is found, he will not go to jail or even be impeached. So can anyone explain what the point of all this is? Dennis Burge

Won’t change a thing

Cambria Heights, L.I.: Re “Trump is 100% transparent” (editorial, Nov. 18): Trump will never — I repeat, never — admit to any wrongdoing or anything that might connect him to Epstein’s shenanigans with underage girls or anyone else! That individual, in addition to being totally corrupt, is without a shred of humanness. The American sheeple will continue to okie-doke everything he says or does because he will continue to appeal to their deepest fears, angers, hatreds and envies. Will it end? I don’t think so! No lesson from world history! Nope. Terri Gilbert

Weaseling out

San Francisco: Why is Donald J. Plump suddenly calling for the release of the Epstein files? Well, he was facing a huge defeat in the House vote to release them (certainly unacceptable to his fragile ego). So, the strategy is to go full gung-ho on the release, then later claim they can not be totally released because the law doesn’t allow it during an investigation — one that he called for. He’s hoping that the law will be blamed and he will be absolved of resisting the release, but any conscious person should be able to see through this sham, full-scale coverup. Jimmy Layton

Torn from within

Chicago: Watching the Ken Burns documentary on the American Revolution this past weekend, I’m left to wonder if this country could ever stand together again and fight as one if our democracy was truly threatened by outside forces. Or is it possible (if not probable) that we might turn on each other long before the conflict is ultimately resolved? Bob Ory

Internecine officials

Floral Park, L.I.: It’s not the people of the United States who are racist or hate one another, rather it is our elected officials who are racists and hate one another, and don’t know how to communicate! Bob Damato

Intellectually lazy

Ledyard, Conn.: To Voicer J.R. Cummings: With all due respect, this is 2025. The reality of the causes of poverty have long been established. Suffice to say, there is no equal-opportunity ladder, and attempts to redress that issue are now being mercilessly eroded. The “all poor people are lazy” trope was debunked a long time ago, though too many people benefit from thinking otherwise. We’ve been erroneously led to believe that there are not enough resources for all. Perhaps those individuals who don’t want to learn about the causes of poverty, and who want to avoid the hard work of making the United States a more fair place to live, are the lazy (or greedy) ones.
