When the car kills, treat drivers like killers
Brooklyn: Your headlines about Miriam Yarimi, who rammed into and killed Natasha Saada and her two children (“Going twice limit as car hit mom, 2 kids,” April 1), are beyond heartbreaking as well as soul-breaking and are real tear-jerkers.
People speeding should be put in jail, especially Yarimi after she drove into pedestrians and killed them on impact. She should have been denied medical treatment and arrested at the scene and charged. Families know what it feels like to lose people to accidents, which they should never know and don’t need to know. Thanks to Yarimi, there is a family ripped apart in my very own community. Everyone has been in a very somber mood after witnessing this accident, and we’re mortified.
Most shocking is the nerve Yarimi had to drive with a suspended license. If she had her car taken away from her, the family would still be full. The only way to ensure that she never drives again is to make sure nobody sells her or rents her a car. It’s only fair that she promises to never drive again, but they should keep her in jail forever so she can never kill another person with her car.
I hope Yarimi repents in prison. I hope the Saada family regroups and heals in a quick way. Yarimi needs to be brought to justice, as she has committed a triple killing. For that, she should pay and have the book thrown at her. Raquel Hanon
Just wait
Toms River, N.J.: When I go out, everybody is honking their horn at somebody so they can get somewhere faster. No patience. If the pizza delivery guy is 20 minutes late, it is upsetting for sure. If you are late picking up your date, it may be the end of the world. If you buy a stock, since some move up quickly, you expect a 30% profit in two weeks. We have become a very impatient society, and when President Trump’s tariff plan has caused nervousness and Trump is asking the country to be patient, he is talking to you and me, and we are predictably having a hard time. I pray to God that the market recovers soon and Trump’s tariff plan that he has been talking about for 40 years is successful. David F. Lipton
The missing piece
East Meadow, L.I.: I get what Trump is trying to do, and I’m not an economist, but when you tariff everyone without leaving un-tariffed supply alternatives, don’t you lose the leverage you need for the plan to work? Greg Hecht
Freewheeling wealth
Charlotte, N.C.: I’ll always remember “Liberation Day 2025” as the beginning of Trump’s new era of economics, taking us all to new heights of wealth after four terrible years under Joe Biden. And after Trump completes his mission by cutting taxes for his wealthy buddies, we can all sit back and let the money start rolling in. As Trump loves to say, we’ll “have so much money we won’t know what to do with it.” I can hardly wait! Go MAGA! Ron Turek

Oakland Gardens: Trump has moved forward on his initiative to put on global tariffs. He has told the American people they may face short-term hardships. He even said he is fine with car prices going up. That’s a tough pill to swallow when many Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Single parents have a hard time feeding their families, paying rent and affording health care. Good leadership finds a way to recognize the challenges those who elected them will face, and are willing to relinquish some of the benefits they have in their position. So my question to the president is: What sacrifices will you make as many Americans wait for prosperity to come while working through the additional hardships you are putting them through in implementing your tariff program? Edinburgh: Forward-looking, self-respecting nations are moving with purpose and energy to make new global alliances, recognizing that the world economic order has shifted. In the way tectonic plates shift before tsunamis, Trump golfs. This time at the Saudi golf tournament in Florida while financial markets crash to the discordant tune of his spiteful tariffs, and Keir Starmer is hoping it will all just go away. Just as Labour has swept the disaster of Brexit under the ever-lumpier political carpet — so it is now trying to do the same with Trump’s tariffs. Maybe Starmer believes that his groveling to Trump in the White House is why the U.K. “only” faces 10% tariffs. Lucky us. In fact, it’s because we have a relatively equivalent trading relationship with the U.S. So, we’ve only got the same level of tariffs as the uninhabited Heard and McDonald penguin islands in the Antarctic. Ignoramus
Queens Village: Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Trump is playing golf while the economy is going up in flames! He knows nothing about economics or global diplomacy. When will MAGAs wake up! Lawrence Krasner
Prepare your panties
Philadelphia: Voicer JoAnn Lee Frank is another MAGA stable genius, this time accusing Democrats of having their “panties in a wad.” Sorry to inform you, Ms. Frank, but the only people not having their panties in a wad are residents of Russia and North Korea, countries led by President Trump’s best friends Vladimir Putin and Kim Jung Un. Let everyone know when your panties are twisted in a wad because your cult leader’s idiotic tariff trade wars and looney threats to forcibly acquire Canada, Greenland or the Panama Canal tank our stock market and job employment, and those beyond-insane Trump policies affect either you or a family member or friend. It’s only a matter of time. When that time comes, make sure you are wearing your pink panties. Diane Doberman
Lose it all
Bronx: I just want to say that I hope Trump, Muskie and the rest of the cabinet lose not just their shirts, but their pants and underwear, too. Anna Maria McCorry
Thanks to you
Brooklyn: Dear Mr. President, thank you for crashing our economy, the destruction of long-time relationships with our allies, the loss of lifetime savings of many Americans, potential destruction of the auto and housing industries and, of course, the worsening inflation. Sleep well, President Trump. Melissa Lieberman
Early RIP
Woodland Park, N.J.: I always felt comfortable in my retirement because I felt that I had enough saved and invested to last for the rest of my life. But with everything in our economy attached to the stock market and these new tariffs in one way or another, I now feel that the only way I have enough money to last the rest of my life is if I pass away somewhat sooner. John Dent
Could be worse
Wellfleet, Mass.: Looking on the bright side, my 401(k) isn’t down to 1k — yet. Mike Rice
Environmental degradation
Brooklyn: Last summer, I grew milkweed in my Cape Cod garden and in the fall I collected the fluffy seeds. When I came back to Brooklyn, I dispersed hundreds of them in remote areas of Prospect Park. I hope they will sprout. Milkweed is the monarch butterfly’s only source of food and its leaves are where they lay their eggs. Now, with the Trump administration in power and Lee Zeldin at the helm of the Environmental Protection Agency, all of these ventures seem futile. The very name of the organization is now an oxymoron. Will this mean we will lose species after species to extinction as anything that stands in the way of industry and thoughtless development will be willfully destroyed? Ed Temple
Intemperate intrusion
Manhattan: So it appears that during his laughably performative trip to Greenland, petulant self-proclaimed “hillbilly” JD Vance was heard to loudly complain about the weather. “Cold as s--t,” he whined. Perhaps the delicate Vance might suggest to his boss that in the future, the United States may want to confine any unwanted and illegal invasions to warmer countries. Anne Stockton
