Canadians are reacting to America’s realities
Toronto: To Voicer Chuck Shannon: I have read numerous articles bemoaning the fact that Canadians are canceling U.S. travel plans (including to NYC), selling their U.S. properties and buying local goods (avoiding U.S. goods wherever possible). Airlines are reducing their Canada-U.S. travel schedules and rerouting to non-U.S. destinations. These initiatives will likely take some toll on the U.S. economy and jobs. Soft data will turn into hard data in government (if any people are left to crunch the data and provide reports) and corporate readings in the not-too-distant future.
I recently visited a friend in Florida who said that of the approximately 600 homes in his community, 60, mostly Canadian-owned, are up for sale and largely not moving. I talked to a few Canadians on that visit and other Canadians who are now U.S. residents elsewhere. They all said the same thing. Their reason for avoiding the U.S. is three-fold: 1) The Canadian loonie has lost flight, and paying for everyday items in the U.S. is getting too expensive. At today’s rate, imagine paying 42% more for everything you buy. That is what Canadians face in the U.S. 2) With the U.S. buck soaring, why not take advantage and cash in (sell their property), converting the proceeds to CAD with 42% more buying power in Canada? Look for other great places to travel. 3) The political climate in the U.S. that includes President Trump, tariffs and Trump’s demeaning and insulting comments concerning Canada (and Greenland and Panama).
Let’s revisit this in six months or so and see how the world has reacted to Trump’s economic theory regarding tariffs and explicitly imperialistic overtones. Peter Earle
Public, not private
Portsmouth, N.H.: Would somebody tell Trump that the presidency is not a business? This isn’t a back-and-forth negotiation for the best deal. This is supposed to be our president protecting and serving the American people. Looks like one more bankruptcy is on the horizon for him. Unfortunately, this time he is taking the United States with him. Elizabeth Smith
Tariff on their merits
Ottawa, Canada: Just like that song by Willie Nelson (“You Were Always on My Mind”), tariffs are on everybody’s minds. Perhaps there is an opportunity to rearrange the whole issue. For instance, let us declare a tariff-free zone, meaning no tariffs on any items coming from CARICOM (Caribbean community) nations. Then target select items, but not all. Move next to “most-favored nations” or “like-minded nations.” Have constructive discussions, see how this works and continue from there. Avoid bad choices of words, like “tit-for-tat” or “retaliatory.” Cooperation, compromise and collaboration. Have a world conference, and I’m willing to bet it will be well-attended. What’s the worst that can happen? It may fail, but at least it was tried. Anant Nagpur
Unearned benefits
Worcester, Mass.: Trump and Elon Musk should leave working people alone. Go after people — male and female — who have been on welfare for 40 and 50 years. Some were born into it and never got off, and keep having children to stay on it. I knew several families like that. Janelle Hines
Deconstructed
Blairstown, N.J.: Why do we need laws and judges? Why do we have the U.S. Senate, House of Representatives and the Constitution? No more checks and balances, only unlimited power and alternative facts. Welcome to the realm of a dictatorial regime. Ron Cristi
Unsafe status quo
Stratford, Conn.: I hope that Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein and the ACLU (“Judge stops Don from booting gang suspects,” April 10) don’t have any relatives or friends who get raped or murdered by immigrant gang members. These people are here illegally, they are known gangbangers and have criminal records, and people think it is fine to have them walk around my country and put our citizens at risk? This Trump hatred has to stop — he is our president, get over it. So Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, who let more than 10 million illegal immigrants into the U.S.A., would have been a better choice? Well, then leave the country and try living in Russia or Canada (they would love to have Americans live next door to them). Peter Sulzicki
No criminality
Amityville, L.I.: Voicer Joseph S. Pidoriano wrote that Andrew Cuomo’s record should cause him to lose support. Why is that, Mr. Pidoriano? I don’t recall seeing a similar opinion from you on Trump — a convicted felon, among other things too numerous to name — running for the highest office in the land. Trump’s actions are leading to the destruction of not only New York City but the whole of America. Due to his criminal record, he doesn’t deserve to serve in any public office, let alone the toughest one in America! He belongs in jail. Cuomo has not been convicted of any crime. His record doesn’t hold a candle to Trump’s criminal record. Good luck, Mr. Cuomo, in your endeavor. Barbara Reynolds
Religious issue
Sunnyside: To Voicer Dan Arthur Pryor: I don’t think you should have mentioned Andrew Cuomo’s Catholicism in your letter. We live in a secular country, so we must always express any pro-life positions from a completely secular viewpoint. And we must always remember that any woman who loses her baby to abortion is as much a victim as her baby. John Francis Fox
Ahistorical understanding
Arcata, Calif.: The political left is rightfully outraged at the voluntary silence of many liberals and/or Democrats on colonial Israel’s genocide against Muslims and Christians in Palestine, the home of Jesus. As a partially Palestinian-American raised as a Christian, allow me to agree with your sincere sentiments. But when you listen to the largely insincere, scared so-called debates in American media about Israel’s indicted war-criminal politicians and generals, they rarely mention that the racist Orthodox Jewish supremacist colony of Israel’s leadership can’t leave without fear of arrest on international warrants. The world has spoken. How many American idiots (mostly Republicans) continue to make the ignorant argument that the Oct. 7, 2023 attack by Hamas was “unprovoked”? As if the illegal, murderous 17-year military siege by Israel against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip never happened! In their sightless eyes, Israelis are always blameless, no matter what atrocities they commit. Jake Pickering
All-male
Ridgewood: To Voicer Carmen Casas: I couldn’t agree with you more. Where is the coverage of women’s sports in the Daily News? Are the writers all men? If you want your readership to go up, publish more of the important and interesting articles about women’s sports. Both sexes will be pleased. L. Tuthill
Get it together
Whitestone: Kudos to Voicer Carmen Casas, who could not have been more on-target with her letter. The Daily News should be ashamed of themselves that they have not taken any action to provide coverage to women’s sports, as it has been brought to attention before — at best, coverage of the metropolitan area women’s sports! As I and others — many have suggested — maybe reduce the size of those ridiculous jumbo pictures and give women’s sports some coverage! It’s not 1973. Time for you guys to rethink your sports section! Patricia W. McGlinchey
Benched beginning
Brooklyn: The season didn’t even start and right away, Giancarlo Stanton was out before spring training and the 162 regular-season games began. This is a broken record with him for years. Wake up, Yankees. Give the young kids a chance to play already. Billy Somma
Bothered by beards
Waldwick, N.J.: I have been a Yankees fan for many years (Mickey Mantle’s era). We used to walk to Yankee Stadium, but now we have to take a bus. I am very disturbed about the new facial hair policy (“Yanks no longer fear the beard!” Feb. 22). This is nuts. How about getting rid of the jewelry? Also, put names of the players on the backs of the shirts. I will not go into Juan Soto. Irmgard Maloni
Off-air
Tuckahoe, N.Y.: To Voicer Robert Smith: You’re right, Audacy is a mess. Two years ago, they took away ALT 92.3 and they put on 1010 WINS. ALT 92.3 is on HD Radio, but people lost their jobs. There are no DJs. I miss Brady, Lars and Christine. It is a shell of itself. Audacy took away WCBS 880. Smith is right, New York deserves better. C. D’Onofrio
