Readers sound off on fixing big problems, being more civil and drone hysteria

Saving the world requires radical collaboration

New Rochelle, N.Y.: Voicer Dustin G. Longmire’s reasonable message regarding a partnering of church and New York State is reasonable and sorely needed. However, as we have painfully learned on the refugee issue, the absence of clear understanding among local, state and federal powers and of a will to address problems have existed since our Founding Fathers sat down.

The current run of people holding the presidential seal have been less than adequate to preserve the Union and put together a foreign policy sufficient to maintain world order. Rev. Longmire might be successful in solving his intrastate opportunity and yet, clergy of all faiths are facing the existential issue of our time: the preservation, repair and renewal of Earth and its atmosphere. Unfortunately, we have no FDR or Lyndon Johnson to put nationwide programs into motion to challenge unemployment. Johnson, with help from heroic citizens such as MLK and RFK, laid legislative groundwork into the words of the Constitution. Ronald Reagan did yeoman service to bring the world closer together. Our last two presidents were deficient at every level. One was too handicapped to serve, the other too self-interested — and reappears with a need to act with reckless abandon to wreak havoc.

I call on all who worship, respect human life and love their world to meet with other houses of faith and embrace the need to tikkun olam, or repair the world. Elon Musk can be an important part of the solution. He will leave Donald Trump sooner, not later. This man is brilliant and rich, and could not resist an invitation from the UN to address the issue. Warren Gross

Lebensraum?

Staten Island: When Musk/Trump take office, they apparently intend to annex the Sudetenland. Oh, sorry, I meant Greenland. This sounds all too familiar. Victor R. Stanwick

Ridiculous ambitions

Bronx: To Margaret Dabraccio: Please stop drinking the Kool-Aid. The only person responsible for Jan. 6 was Trump. President Biden won fair and square. The recent rant by Trump about wanting Greenland and wanting Canada to be the 51st state — first off, as Denmark said in his first term: Greenland is not for sale. And as far as Canada, don’t you think the Canadians might have some say as to where they want to belong? And the audacity to think that a country the size of Canada should be one state. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid. Martin Sandok

Stop with the clocks

Malverne, L.I.: If there was ever a cause I felt strongly about, it is eradicating spring-ahead daylight saving time time! To have the clocks ahead one hour makes for more darkness in the morning. It was thought of by Benjamin Franklin when there was candlelight. Technology has entered the picture with LED lighting. The choice is clear. Send the right message to our children, that mornings are meant for waking up early and heading to school, work, jogging, golfing and everything that comes with a full, long life. Go to bed early and be wealthy, healthy and wise. This has been Donald Trump’s mantra. The clocks are set at standard time in the United States. Let’s set the standard for the rest of the world and keep them there. It’s the wise choice! Kosmas Patikoglou

Last line of defense

Jersey City: During the campaign, so many voters appear to have thought that accurate reports on the convicted felon candidate’s statements appeared so crazy that they took them for Democratic negative campaign trickery, and were reported to have voted for the man who had never before come within 7 million votes of a majority, giving him an unlikely majority and a victory. Since then, that candidate’s initial cabinet proposals and statements have proved that his campaign accurately reflected his positions as even more irresponsible than the disastrous actions of his first term, not only killing hundreds of thousands of Americans during COVID and alienating our allies and destroying our economy, but raising the serious question of what it will take for responsible Republican electors to refuse to cast votes in the Electoral College for this dangerously un-American person, justifying the faith the Founding Fathers had in this last safety valve for our national government. John Esche

Wait your turn

Brooklyn: Why are Lucifer and his peons acting as though they are already in charge? There can only be one president and one administration at a time. Sadly, they will have at least four years to destroy the world. Jan. 20 is right around the corner. Stand down until then. June Lowe

Ain’t the season

Bronx: This is the season of hope and peace, a time for reflection on the things that matter most. But sadly, there are those who feel disheartened and find themselves in the throes of anger, frustration and uncertainty. I have been a contributor to the Voice of the People for some years now, and can say without any equivocation that Voicers T.S. Fallani and Susan Cassano are consumed with rage and desperation, and have to be two of the nastiest, most immature and vicious people who’ve ever commented in the Daily News. Their contempt and disrespect for fellow Americans whose values and principles might differ from theirs is loathsome. What makes this even more pathetic is that Cassano concludes her comments with “Merry Christmas.” It is hypocritical to express this particular sentiment while you harbor such thoughts. The meaning of Christmas is joy, peace and love, not hate. Bob Pascarella

Take more care

Brooklyn: Now is the time to evaluate the past year and make resolutions for the new one. I pray that in 2025, people will show more compassion and consideration for each other — and I hope that politicians will do this as well. If you are making New Year’s resolutions, consider these: driving more carefully and alert, showing kindness to the poor and less fortunate, and reading/thinking more carefully and critically. May 2025 be a better year for us all. Ellen Levitt

Deserving Mets

Bethlehem, Pa.: I’m very happy that David Wright will have his number retired as a N.Y. Met. He worked hard and was a total team player. It’s now time for Bud Harrelson and Ed Kranepool’s numbers to get the same treatment. Bud was the only one to win two World Series rings as a player and coach, and even managed the team. While playing, he served his military time, even woke up the team going at it with Pete Rose in ’73. Ed was an original, playing his whole career for the Mets. He had records at Shea Stadium well before Citi Field was erected. Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez are all great picks, but at one time had trouble. Bud and Ed were flawless. If Steve Cohen is truly a Mets fan, he should get this done. C’mon, Uncle Steve. Wayne O’Connor

Keep to quality

Liberty, N.Y.: I was so happy to do the crossword by Jacqueline E. Matthews instead of Ricky Cruz. Please keep her, the puzzles are so much better. Loretta Guido

Electoral equalizer

Campbell Hall, N.Y.: Your editorial calling for the end of the Electoral College (“Dump the Electoral College,” Dec. 17) fails to include the real reason our forefathers instituted it. If we elected a president based solely on the popular vote, the states of New York, California and Florida would probably elect every president. Smaller states would find it very hard to receive federal funds because there would be no incentive to help the smaller states. The Electoral College allows the votes of all citizens to count equally. James C. McGovern

Alien destination

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.: What’s all the fuss about strange aircraft seen over New Jersey? Remember when Martians invaded Grovers Mill in 1938? History repeats. Bob English

Drone-shy

Bronx: I heard that Trump will not go to his Bedminster, N.J., home because of the drone sightings. Is he showing his true cowardice? He couldn’t serve in the military because of his heel spurs and now he is afraid of drones. I had heel spurs. I had surgery to remove them. Anna Maria McCorry
