Americans will suffer from alienating the world
Auckland, New Zealand: I am a retired registered nurse. I have visited the U.S. five times in the last 16 years to visit family. I never feel safe in the U.S. Your gun laws are the main reason. I spent 12 months in Central and South America and felt really safe in Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, Panama and Brazil. I laugh when I hear Americans say Colombia is unsafe — it’s safer than America, with its too many gun-happy citizens. China is really safe and great to visit. I spent a lot of time in Asia.
I will not visit the U.S. while President Trump is in office. I’m disgusted by the goings-on at the border. Also, medical insurance is expensive and prices are exorbitant. Hospitals have poor quality of care. I worked in New Zealand and Australian hospitals that are world-class. Canada has the same health care system as Australia and New Zealand and has reciprocal care with them plus Britain. If I get sick in Canada, I have the same free care as its citizens. It is safer and cheaper. Keep up the nonsense with Canada and your travel economy will be badly affected. Britain, France and Germany are giving warnings to their citizens about visiting your country.
I am traveling to China, Morocco and Portugal this year, safer countries to visit. I’m going back to India next year. America is expensive and not worth visiting. Americans are in for a hard time thanks to Trump. My superannuation (pension) has dipped thanks to his nonsense. It will come back up, but I’m worried what that man will do. Dianne Davies
Foreign firestorm
Brewster, N.Y.: The president has turned his back on our friends and allies. He has given aid, comfort and support to countries such as Russia, Iran, Syria and North Korea, which are brutal dictatorships and do not share our values. A friend like Canada, which has had our back during the Gulf Wars and 9/11, has been treated in a condescending and embarrassing manner. Canadians are booing the American anthem thanks to our president. It would be hard to do more damage to our foreign policy than he has done in a short period of time! Embarrassing! Larry Maslak
Stupidity standard
Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.: Can any of the dotard’s MAGA fans provide an instance where alleged DEI secretary of defense hire and four-star Gen. Lloyd Austin sent U.S. war plans and military operations info over an unsecured chat app? If you can’t, that’s fine because I understand the new DEI for senior administration personnel stands for “dumb and extremely incompetent,” and the only requirement is being a white male or female. Does anyone else miss the too-old-to-be-president from Delaware who actually assembled a competent administration? Michael Royster
Prior mistakes
Hicksville, L.I.: I would like to remind all who criticize the Trump administration over the Signal chat incident that Rep. Eric Swalwell slept with a Chinese spy for two years. Sen. Dianne Feinstein had a Chinese spy as a chauffeur. Secretary of Defense Austin disappeared for more than a week without notifying anyone, and he was in charge when we lost 11 Marines, a soldier and a sailor during the Afghanistan withdrawal in what was a bigger screwup than the Signal chat. Austin then ordered a drone strike that wiped out a whole family of Afghan innocents trying to rectify his incompetence. There was Hillary Clinton with classified info on her home server. Finally, what is going to be remembered as the biggest breach of all was the cover-up of the senility of a dementia-ridden President Joe Biden. What do they all have in common? No one was ever held accountable. John Gelormino
Demigod devotion
Highland Falls, N.Y.: It is with bitter laughter that I read the various reactions to “Signalgate” demanding that the Trumpers take “responsibility.” It should be obvious to all by now that words like honor, integrity and accountability have no place in Trump World. If the Signalgate crowd ever knew these words, they have been replaced by “slavish devotion.” As for their orange god, his words come straight from Leonard Cohen’s song “The Future”: “When they said repent, I wondered what they meant.” When you can do no wrong, how can your imbecilic, cretinous and in all likelihood drunken underlings do any? I will end this letter now, as I feel another burst of laughter coming on. Joe Cyr
Blue scare
Chicago: It looks like Big Bird could be a dead duck if Trump and his fellow “truth-seekers” have their way. After all, they seem determined to defund public television. So, anyone still interested in what life might have been like in the Joseph McCarthy era need only review the current goings-on in our nation’s capital. In fact, if one were to substitute the name Trump for McCarthy and the word liberalism for communism, the meaning would be no different and the consequences for opposing the loudmouth leader any less frightening. Bob Ory
Party apparatchik
Delmar, N.Y.: I strongly disagree with the recent editorial concerning Elise Stefanik (“Stefanik’s UN loss is N.Y.’s gain,” March 28). Her staying in the House of Representatives constitutes a major loss for New York. Stefanik is a spoiled rich kid, to paraphrase the late state Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno. She was educated at private schools and is now a loud Joe McCarthy wannabe. Her record in Congress demonstrates that she is a clear and present danger to veterans, Social Security and other benefits for her constituents. New York needs representatives with integrity, not political opportunists who support the radical undermining of federal programs that harm average, hard-working Americans. Stefanik has not yet resigned because the GOP knows it would lose in a special election due to the anger at the policies and chaotic leadership of Trump and Musk. New York would only gain if Stefanik resigned and became another D.C. lobbyist. William A. Herbert
Loyal to the crown
Brooklyn: Your editorial concerning Stefanik’s loss of the UN ambassadorship fails to take into consideration the fact that she is an election denier. She has unequivocally demonstrated that she will put Trump first above all else. Her loyalty is to the king, not the Constitution nor the people she was elected to represent. Edward M. Kenny
Sad site
Manhattan: $700-million flood walls still covered in polyplastic after three years. The brilliant minds never heard of graffiti, or are they afraid they will get wet? Anyway, it’s an eyesore that just collects trash. Joseph Duffy
Biological disaster
Bayside: Now that these new composting rules are being imposed on the five boroughs, will the Sanitation Department acquire new trucks for said purpose, or will they just toss it in the same trucks with all the other garbage? Those who do not comply will be charged with hefty fines, yet another tax for struggling taxpayers. There are those who still do not clean their recyclables. Can you imagine what composting will be like? Hello rats! Mary Santora
Fists and faith
Forked River, N.J.: The world lost one of it greatest boxing legends and a truly great man, George Foreman. He was a man of God with a right hook that could knock a heavyweight champion into next week, an Olympic champion, family man and preacher. Years ago, I sent him a letter after he defended Michael Vick after Vick’s release from prison for felony animal cruelty. I told George that not only did he get it wrong, but if he thought otherwise, he would have me to deal with. George sent me a letter back: “Hello pal, I’ll try to be a better person this year. Thank you for your note. Love, George Foreman.” That was him, a man who made it to the top of the world but whose faith reminded him to be humble and loving. Godspeed, George, you left this world better than you found it. Jim Hughes
Deprogrammed
Staten Island: What happened to the morning show on WOR AM radio? Len Berman and Michael Riedel were direct opposites, but they presented a program that was informative, funny and classy. I am sure Larry Menthe is a nice gentleman, but he has a monotone voice and is obviously reading from a script. Bring back Len and Michael to improve this radio program. Marie Mandia
