Readers sound off on railing against Trump, liberal Jewish values and cleaner eating

Anti-Trump screeds are useless and irritating

Malverne, L.I.: To all my Donald Trump-hating Voicer friends: Every morning I read the Voice of the People, and for the last nine or so years, there is never a day where your rhetoric is not in print. Additionally, you bemoan anyone who disagrees with you, and with such vitriol.

For a class of people who claim that the left is the side that is supposed to be the most compassionate and accepting, you fail terribly. I guess that compassion and acceptance are only for those who agree with you. I, for one, am extremely exhausted with it all, and I am sure I am not the only one.

The country just went through four years of the Biden administration, which proved to be an utter disaster. The people with a decisive decision said we are not better now than we were four years ago and voted Trump back into office. We get it, you don’t like the man, and I know that it is difficult for many to accept.

I have recently made some very civil pleas to end the madness, which The News has graciously printed. However, your Trump Derangement Syndrome is just too strong, so no more of the nice, coddling words to help you along.

So, here is some tough love that will hopefully help: You lost, so suck it up, buttercup, and move on! David Kalin

Beyond norms and laws

Glendale: If the president of the United States can not pardon one person for one felony, why is Donald Trump getting away with 34 felonies? Is this what this country has turned into? A person who steals from the government, doesn’t pay taxes and assaults women walks out of a courtroom? Argues with the judge? Anyone else would be held in contempt. A man who tells a mob to storm the Capitol — where people were killed — saying, “I’ll be right behind you,” but of course wasn’t. I don’t see this incoming president as a president, but as a dictator. Laurel Turnbull

The Donald’s house

Whitestone: If they had charged Mar-a-Lago and killed his security guard, would he pardon them? Sally DeFelice

Outdated idea

Hamilton Square, N.J.: To Voicer Paul Weiss: You say the wisdom of our founders should not be lightly regarded. Does that mean only white men should vote? Everyone needs to understand that the Electoral College was a compromise to a small segment of voters. States have been added and populations shift over time (Florida and Texas are good examples). The time has come for one person, one vote. Majority rule is how we make most of the decisions in our lives. Weiss has it backwards. The system does not force candidates to pay attention to the concerns of voters in states of all sizes. Eileen Johnson

Tone-deaf talent

Bronx: We are besieged on all sides by entertainers who infiltrate and intrude upon every federal, religious and patriotic holiday with their outrageous costumes, makeup, screaming and singing soulless and unsuitable songs. Their frenetic jumping and exaggerated props (smoke and blinding lights) can’t hide the lack of genuine talent and lack of personality, too much ego and ignorance of uplifting language. People want what is proper for the occasion, such as hearing fireworks boom on the Fourth of July and flags waving during veterans’ parades on Memorial Day, Armistice Day and July 4. Church choirs and dignified concerts for Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. An emphasis on lasting relationships for Valentine’s Day; Abraham Lincoln’s and George Washington’s birthdays celebrated with a presidential speech and/or reading of patriotic poems or speeches. Keep entertainers — as much as we love and revere our favorites — for Disney, the movies, records and TV where they belong and do best. Rose Mary Lancaster

Pitch-imperfect

Yonkers: I think I caught you guys in your article on Rocky Colavito (“Fan fave Colavito dies,” Dec. 11). You stated that he was traded for “pitcher” Harvey Kuenn, who was one of the best shortstops in baseball. I guess we all make errors. Warren Isaacs

Aged out

Staten Island: Can anyone explain to me why the Jets hired Aaron Rodgers? His age and first-season loss due to his ankle — he says he wants to return next season? The man is a Social Security quarterback. To me, he’s done in football. Andy LaBarca

End of story

Bronx: The last episode of “Blue Bloods” — what a mistake! I cried when it was over. A family that showed you love, courage and understanding. A family dinner every Sunday. A prayer before the meal. All you see on TV is murder, horror, vampires and ghosts. Please bring back good TV (and Tom Selleck)! Maryanne Schulhoff

Soft idealism

New Hyde Park, L.I.: If the Daily News is truly interested in delivering unbiased journalism, one must question its decision to employ two liberal Jews to give viewpoints on “The meaning of Chanukah” on opposite pages. We know from previous op-eds that Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson (“Showing the menorah without fear,” op-ed, Dec. 29) advocates abortion, which contravenes halacha (Jewish law), not to mention goes against the grain of humanity and morality. Ben Krull (“My holiday wish for an Israel at war,” op-ed, Dec. 29) no doubt rejoices that Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran are “on the defensive,” but thinks the right-wing Israeli government that brought about this urgently needed situation to stop attacks on Israel “makes it painful for liberal Zionists like myself to embrace the Jewish state.” Liberal Jews like this pair worship the notion of tikkun olam — repairing the world — but are so blindsided by this idealistic trope that they place it above halacha, the safety of Israel and the realistic nature of the human race, politics and the way the world runs. Don’t fault students

Atlanta: Voicer Nick Smith is wrong. Anti-Israel demonstrators don’t have the right to occupy public areas on college campuses, preventing Jewish students from getting to their classes or accessing the college library. Nor do those anti-Israel activists have the right to demand that students who’ve taken organized trips to Israel be denied the opportunity to participate in student governance. Gazans are suffering because Hamas spent $1 billion building an extensive network of terror tunnels, embedded so deeply among the populace that Israel’s exemplary efforts to avoid civilian casualties (praised by West Point’s Major John Spencer) can’t be 100% effective. Hostilities will end when Hamas releases the hostages and tells its fighters to lay down their arms. If Hamas is allowed to fulfill its vow to inflict 1,000 Oct. 7s on Israelis, Hamas will continue using the Gazans as human shields and stealing humanitarian aid intended for the people’s benefit. You first

Flushing: As soon as Voicer Nick Smith’s furniture is out on the curb, as he returns his house/apartment to the Native Americans who he “stole” from, we can have a meaningful discussion with him regarding the Middle East. Charles Tal

Cleanse your plate

Manhattan: New Year’s resolution, anyone? How about one with multiple benefits for our health, our planet and the animals? Eating more veggies, fruits, legumes, grains and nuts helps us stay healthier, reduce global warming and stop animal suffering. It requires no exertion or deprivation. And it saves money! The abundant nutrients and vitamins in plant foods keep us in top health, while their fiber keeps us regular. Plant foods don’t do drugs, antibiotics, hormones, cholesterol or saturated fats. Concerned about ultra-processed foods? Then you certainly don’t want your food processed through an animal’s digestive tract. Best of all, plant-based eating is supported by your local supermarket, which offers a rich variety of plant meats, cheeses and ice creams in their frozen food sections, as well as a wide selection of nut and grain milks. Same goes for your favorite family restaurant and nearly every fast food franchise. Bon appetit! Nico Young

Take care a day at a time

Bronx: Put 2024 behind you. Start fresh. There are 365 days in 2025. Each day, be kind to yourself and others. Smile and laugh more often, it will make your day a little bit brighter. May 2025 bring you peace and happiness. Enjoy the holidays. Marsha Kolin
