Readers sound off on what genocide means, Jeffries vs. Mamdani and editorials

As tragic as Gaza is, it’s the realities of war

Margate, Fla.: Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels infamously said, “A lie told once remains a lie, but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.” Voicer T.S. Fallani’s enthusiastic calumny of “genocide” is negated by the facts.

In fact, “Palestinian genocide” is a Big Lie that Goebbels would be proud of. The numbers do not lie. In 1947/1948, there were 1 million Arabs from the river to the sea. In 2023/2024, 11 million Arabs claim to be Palestinian. Genocide? Give me a break! And Gaza? In the last year, in spite of obviously difficult conditions, there has been a 2.84% population increase of 22,771 in Gaza, according to World Population Review’s website. When the Nazis committed the genocide of the Jews of Europe, that population went down from 11 million to 5 million. The Jewish population of Europe did not increase.

All that these endless calumnies of Jews causing Palestinian genocide have done is to inspire antisemites to kill and attempt to kill and maim Jews in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Colorado and elsewhere under the murderous banner of “Free Palestine.”

There is no genocide. There is a war — initiated a la Pearl Harbor by 3,800 Hamas sociopaths and 2,200 civilian Gazan willing executioners on Oct. 7 who broke an existing ceasefire — in which, as in all wars, unfortunately, enemy combatants and civilians die. The population of Gaza and Palestinians worldwide is increasing — a fact that must be fanatically obfuscated by all those promoting the Big Lie of a Palestinian genocide. Richard Sherman

Your turn

Bronx: To Voicer Robert J. Katz: I am about to condemn Israel, but first I’d like to mention that Hamas invaded Israel on 10/7 and murdered people, committed atrocities and kidnapped people. Since that time, Israel has unjustifiably destroyed 90% of Gaza, bombed or shot to death more than 60,000 people and caused widespread disease and starvation. The systematic brutalization of the people of Gaza is nothing short of genocide. Now that I have mentioned Hamas while condemning Israel, I wonder if Katz is ready to address Israel’s war crimes, or is there another deflection he wishes to employ? Steven Davies

Killing the messengers

Los Altos, Calif.: I write with horror and fury at Israel’s latest crime: the deliberate bombing of Nasser Hospital in Gaza that killed at least 20 people, including five courageous Palestinian journalists from Reuters, Al Jazeera and the Associated Press. This was no accident. Eyewitnesses describe a calculated “double-tap” strike — a drone strike on the roof where journalists were livestreaming, followed by a second missile aimed at the rescuers and reporters rushing to help. Israel knew exactly who it was killing. These journalists — Mariam Abu Daqqa, Hussam al-Masri, Mohammad Salama, Moaz Abu Taha and Ahmad Abu Aziz — were not “terrorists.” They were truth-tellers documenting Israel’s destruction. Israel has now murdered 244 journalists in Gaza, more than were killed in all of World War II or 20 years of the Vietnam War. This is an assault on truth itself, meant to blind the world while Israel carries out genocide. Jagjit Singh

Foreign allegiance

Manhattan: Once again, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries has met with Zohran Mamdani, and once again refused to endorse him. Jeffries says he’s not happy with Mamdani’s support of the Palestinians and lack of support for Israel. Mamdani is running for mayor of NYC, not Tel Aviv. As one of the 1 million Jewish residents of this city, I look forward to voting for Mamdani in the November election. I am appalled and sickened by what Israel is doing to the Gazans. I’d think the minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives would show some compassion for the starving children in Gaza and the more than 60,000 people killed by the Israelis, including children, women, aid workers, doctors and journalists, including American citizens. Or at least he’d respect the choice of voters. But no, he’s withholding his endorsement. I wonder how much the $1.3 million Jeffries received from AIPAC is influencing his decision. Miriam Applebaum

Nonsensical

Brooklyn: Mamdani is anti-American. He wants to abolish private property. Say goodbye to your house. He wants to abolish prisons altogether. Fine, as long as they live with him. Otherwise, we will have more crime. He’s against charter schools. He is anti-Jewish and anti-Israel. Government-run grocery stores — empty shelves, no food selection and the government dictating what you eat. He has people believing in free buses while the MTA is raising fares. He wants social workers to do police work, and wants to tax billionaires, not millionaires, because he is a millionaire. He’s a walking contradiction. Maureen Deman

Socialism in practice

Brooklyn: The Trump administration is taking 10% of Intel and is now looking at the defense industry to take parts of those companies. My only question: Isn’t that socialism? Haven’t the Republicans been crying that the Democrats are the socialists for the last 10 years? Harvey Kaplan

Sanctioned crime

Nyack, N.Y.: If Trump was really serious about stopping crime in Washington, D.C., then he should have used the National Guard on Jan. 6, 2021, when thousands of criminals were beating on the police and destroying parts of the Capitol in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Instead, he didn’t do anything for more than three hours while relishing what was happening in his name. He tried to shift the blame of not calling out the National Guard to Nancy Pelosi, when it’s now clearly obvious that it was in his power to do so. Stanley Cracovia

Prior deployment

Bayside: Maybe NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch should get out of the office and take a walk. The National Guard has already been deployed by Gov. Hochul to the subways and train stations in NYC. If Trump says deploy the National Guard, it’s bad. If the governor deploys the Guard, it’s good? Something is very wrong with this picture! Timothy Collins

Get well soon

Bronx: I can’t find the word or words to describe learning about the shooting of Anthonaya Campbell (” ‘They were like family,’ ” Aug. 27). I am praying for her complete recovery, and that she will be able to happily resume her young life and to pursue her goal, should she still want it, to become a speech pathologist. I hope she has a wonderful life thereafter, too. Thanks to all of the writers of that article. John F. Early

Bled talent

Sea Isle City, N.J.: Again, the N.Y. Giants screwed up. They released Tommy DeVito, a homegrown kid and pretty damn good quarterback. The Mara family should look to sell the franchise while it’s still worth something. I hope DeVito gets signed by some team and comes back to beat you. Remember Saquon Barkley? What did he do last against his former team? The general manager needs to go back to Buffalo on a bus so he has more than six hours to think about how he screwed this team up in just three years. Jim Fusco

Delayed game

Rye, N.Y.: I recently resumed home delivery of the Daily News and was looking forward Wednesday morning to reading about the Mets’ exciting win Tuesday night. I soon realized that my Sports Final edition included nothing — zip, nada — about a game that ended about 10:30 the previous night (the electronic edition did include full coverage, which isn’t always the case). A good friend of mine was a copy boy at The News in 1970 or so. One of his tasks was to take the subway out to Shea Stadium or Yankee stadium, hang around the press box until The News photographer’s film was available, then jump on the subway and carry it back to The News. They managed to develop and print the photos, set type and print the “four-star final” and have it out by 1 a.m.! So this is progress? Michael Niss

Take back space

Queens Village: What has happened to The News’ editorial page? Whether I agreed with them or not, it always featured two interesting editorial takes on current events. Now it is filled with extremely biased and mostly useless “Be Our Guest” op-eds. Daily News, please bring us back your opinions! Darren Leeds
