The dog who was in the backseat of Renee Good’s van when she was shot by an ICE agent last Wednesday is safe at home with Good’s wife.
The canine could be seen staring out the rolled-down back window in footage captured on the cell phone of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent later identified as Jonathan Ross, who was walking around the vehicle and recording. He stopped briefly to talk to Good’s wife, Rebecca Good, who was outside the car’s passenger side, filming him.
When Ross returned to confront Renee as she sat behind the wheel, she smiled and said sweetly, “I’m not mad at you, dude” as she pulled away. Those were her last words before the agent fired three bullets through the window, according to multiple videos taken from a number of angles.
“F—ing bitch,” muttered a male voice picked up by Ross’s phone as Good’s car rolled down the street and crashed into a row of parked cars. The dog survived.
Residents converging on the scene asked Rebecca if they could call anyone on her behalf, a nearby resident told People. Rebecca told them the couple had recently moved to the city from out of state and had a 6-year-old in school, said the neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous.
“That’s my wife. They shot her in the f—-ing head, dude,” Rebecca yelled, according to the resident. “This is ridiculous!”
SWAT team members converged, and Rebecca started screaming, the neighbor said.
“My wife!” Rebecca cried, then stood up, saying, “There’s a dog in the back. Can someone get it for me, please?”
She was able to retrieve the animal, and the two sat together on the steps of a house while investigators and other officials combed the scene, People reported.
“On Wednesday, January 7th, we stopped to support our neighbors,” Rebecca wrote in a statement released to MPR on Friday, saying of ICE agents, “We had whistles. They had guns.”
She expressed gratitude for worldwide support that had streamed in since Renee’s killing and said it resonated with the 37-year-old mom’s credo of kindness.
Renee not only radiated kindness but also “sparkled,” Rebecca said. “I swear she had sparkles coming out of her pores. All the time. You might think it was just my love talking, but her family said the same thing. Renee was made of sunshine.”
