Roof collapses at NJ produce plant, all 150 employees safe

The roof of a produce processing plant in South Jersey collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, but all 150 employees inside were safely accounted for, officials said.

Three sections of the roof at Seabrook Brothers & Sons caved in around 1:30 p.m., NJ.com reported. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.

Of the 150 people inside, one person suffered minor injuries at the scene and refused treatment, according to local NBC affiliate WCAU. A second person was evaluated at a medical facility, and a first responder was treated for a heat-related illness.

Seabrook Brothers & Sons processes fruits and vegetables at its plant in Upper Deerfield, about 30 miles south of Philadelphia. Temperatures in South Jersey reached 100 degrees on Wednesday afternoon.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, Cumberland County Administrator Kevin Smaniotto said at a press conference. Photos from the scene showed one side wall flat on the ground, while a large section of the roof had collapsed.

Initial 911 calls reported an explosion at the facility, local ABC affiliate WPVI reported. However, investigators believe it was a mix-up and the noise of the collapse confused the callers.
