Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón have awkward exchange at 2025 Oscars after alleged ‘rich rat’ remark

Selena Gomez and her “Emlilia Perez” co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón, were forced to come face-to-face at the 2025 Oscars — months after Gascón’s scathing remarks about Gomez.

The duo rubbed shoulders with the Hollywood elite on Sunday night, where Gascón was nominated for Best Actress but ultimately lost out to “Anora” star Mikey Madison.

The star-studded event came just weeks after several of Gascón’s’s past social media posts resurfaced, in which she criticized Muslim culture and George Floyd.

She even allegedly called Gomez a “rich rat” before being cast with her in “Emilia Perez.”

In a now-viral exchange, Gascón — who skipped the red carpet — was seen walking over to Gomez, who was sat in her seat during the Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

As Gascón, 52, approached the “Love On” singer, Gomez stood up, and awkwardly kissed her co-star on the cheek before sitting back down.

Needless to say, the brief interaction was met with confusion from fans on social media.

“Selena should stop talking with her. Karla is disgusting after everything she did,” one person wrote on X.

Another added, “Hm, not sure why a kiss was necessary after all of that??”

“Yikes. Well that’s awkward,” a third added.

After Gascón’s alleged since-deleted tweet resurfaced online, internet sleuths discovered that it was originally shared in 2022 after Gomez and Hailey Bieber came together at the Annual Academy Museum Gala amid their alleged feud, according to the Latin Times.

However, Gascón told CNN en Español last month that the tweet about Gomez is fake.

“Of course that’s not mine,” Gascón said during the interview, which she allegedly did without Netflix’s approval.

“I have never said anything about my partner. I would never refer to her that way,” the actress added.

Gascón’s controversy loomed large ahead of Sunday’s Academy Awards, where she was the first openly transgender nominated performer.

Her co-star Zoe Saldaña, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Emilia Perez,” previously said that she’s “disappointed” over the drama involving her co-star.

Gomez, for her part, broke silence on Gascón’s alleged tweets last month, admitting that “some of the magic has disappeared” when she was asked how she’s doing after the ordeal.

“But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful,” Gomez said.

“I live with no regrets,” the Golden Globe nominee added, “and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”

During his opening monologue, Academy Award host Conan O’Brien poked fun at Gascón’s social media controversy.

Noting that “Anora” — which picked up the top awards on Sunday night — used “the f-word 479 times,” O’Brien added, “That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascon’s publicist: ‘You tweeted WHAT?’”

““Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight and Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel,” he added, as a cringing Gascón responded with a tight smile.
