Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Thursday announced her Democratic campaign for governor of Minnesota, where unrest and protests have been near constant since the start of the New Year.
“Minnesota, we’ve been through a lot,” Klobuchar said in a video posted on X, highlighting the political violence ripping the state apart, specifically the recent ICE-involved shootings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti.
“We cannot sugarcoat how hard this is, but in these moments of enormous difficulty, we find strength in our Minnesota values of hard work, freedom and simple decency and good will,” she continued. “These times call for leaders who can stand up and not be rubber stamps of this administration. But who are also willing to find common ground and fix things in our state.”
Her announcement comes shortly after current Gov. Tim Walz revealed he would not re-seek the office. He campaigned for Vice President alongside Kamala Harris in 2024, but the Democratic duo ultimately lost out to President Trump, and his vice presidential pick JD Vance.
Walz ditched his campaign for a third term earlier this month, a decision in part inspired by criticism over mismanagement of taxpayer funding for child care programs.
“I believe we must stand up for what’s right and fix what’s wrong,” said Klobuchar, who has served in Washington for decades.
